Indications
Trospium is prescribed for the management of overactive bladder, a condition characterized by involuntary contractions of the bladder muscles that lead to frequent urination, a compelling need to urinate, and difficulty controlling urination. Trospium belongs to a group of drugs known as antimuscarinics. Its mode of action involves the relaxation of the bladder muscles, effectively preventing episodes of urgent, frequent, or involuntary urination.
Uses and Dosage
Trospium is available in both tablet and extended-release capsule forms for oral administration. Typically, the tablet is taken twice a day, either on an empty stomach or 1 hour prior to meals, although in some cases it may be taken once daily at bedtime. The trospium extended-release capsule is generally taken once a day in the morning with water, on an empty stomach, and at least 1 hour before having a meal. To ensure consistent adherence, aim to take trospium at roughly the same time each day.
Take trospium exactly as prescribed—do not exceed or reduce the dosage, and do not take it more frequently than directed by your doctor.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- dry mouth, eyes, or nose
- constipation
- headache
- confusion
- gas
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- difficulty urinating
- swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
- rash
- hives
- itching
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- hallucinations
Caution
Before initiating trospium, notify your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies you may have, whether related to trospium or other substances. This product could contain inactive components that have the potential to trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication, especially if you have a history of glaucoma, kidney disease, liver disease, stomach/intestinal problems, myasthenia gravis, or urinary retention (inability to urinate).
This medication may induce dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Refrain from activities that require alertness or clear vision until you can safely perform them.
This medication may reduce your ability to sweat, potentially increasing the risk of heat stroke. Avoid activities that could lead to overheating, such as strenuous work or exercise in hot weather, or the use of hot tubs. When the weather is warm, stay well-hydrated and dress lightly. If you experience overheating, promptly seek a cool place to rest. Seek immediate medical assistance if you have a persistent fever, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness.
Elderly individuals may be more sensitive to certain side effects of this drug, particularly constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness, confusion, or difficulty urinating. Drowsiness and confusion can increase the risk of falls.
During pregnancy, use this medication only when it is unequivocally necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is unclear whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQ
How long does it take for Sanctura to start working?
You should start to notice some gradual improvement within a few weeks of starting the tablets. By the time you have taken them for 6 weeks, you should be noticing a real difference in your OAB.
How long do I have to wait to eat after taking Sanctura?
Sanctura should be taken on an empty stomach 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
