Description

Indications

Vancomycin is an antibiotic medication that is effective in treating bacterial infections. It is specifically used to treat a particular intestinal condition, known as colitis, that is caused by harmful bacteria. This condition often results in stomach/abdominal discomfort, pain, and diarrhea.

By targeting the bacteria responsible for these symptoms, vancomycin stays in the intestines and prevents further bacterial growth. Vancomycin is solely effective against bacterial infections in the intestines and is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu. Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics as this can lead to them losing their effectiveness against future infections.

Uses and Dosage

Vancomycin is available as both a capsule and oral solution. Typically, it is taken 3-4 times a day for a period of 7-10 days. To ensure consistency, vancomycin should be taken at approximately the same time each day. Take vancomycin exactly as directed, without taking more or less of it, or taking it more frequently than prescribed.

Before each use, shake the oral solution vigorously to ensure that the medication is evenly mixed.

During the initial days of taking vancomycin, you should start to feel better. If your symptoms persist or worsen, contact your doctor.

Continue to take vancomycin until you have finished your prescription, even if you feel better. Stopping the medication too soon or missing doses may lead to an incomplete cure of the infection and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
