Description
Indications
Icosapent ethyl belongs to a group of medications known as antilipemic or lipid-regulating agents. It is prescribed in conjunction with lifestyle changes such as a modified diet, weight loss, and exercise to reduce the levels of triglycerides, a type of fat in the blood.
Icosapent ethyl is also used in combination with cholesterol-lowering medications, specifically statins, to decrease the risk of heart attack, stroke, or other heart-related ailments that require hospitalization in certain adults with high triglyceride levels, heart disease, or diabetes along with two or more other risk factors for heart disease. The medication is believed to work by reducing the production of triglycerides and other fats in the liver.
