Description

Indications

The combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide serves as a treatment for high blood pressure. Lisinopril falls into a category of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It operates by reducing specific chemicals that constrict blood vessels, facilitating smoother blood flow. Hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a class of medications referred to as diuretics, often termed ‘water pills.’ Its function involves prompting the kidneys to expel excess water and salt from the body, eliminating them through urine.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication as directed by your doctor, either with or without food, typically once daily in the morning. If you find that this medication increases your urination frequency, it’s advisable to take it at least 4 hours prior to bedtime to minimize nighttime urination.

If you’re also prescribed certain cholesterol-lowering drugs (like bile acid-binding resins such as cholestyramine or colestipol), ensure you take lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide at least 4 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after these medications.

The dosage depends on your medical condition and how you respond to treatment.

To derive the maximum benefit from this medication, use it consistently at the same time each day. Even if you’re feeling well, continue taking this medication as prescribed because high blood pressure often presents no noticeable symptoms.

If your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain elevated or increase, inform your doctor.

Caution

Before using this product, make sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you have, including allergies to lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, or other ACE inhibitors (such as captopril or benazepril). This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other issues.

Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of allergic reactions involving facial swelling (angioedema), have undergone blood filtering procedures like LDL apheresis or dialysis, received desensitizing treatment for bee/wasp sting allergies, or if you have conditions like gout, lupus, kidney disease, liver disease, or skin cancer.

Be aware that this medication might cause dizziness. The use of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this dizziness. Refrain from activities that require alertness, like driving or operating machinery, until you can do so safely.

In cases of severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting, you may become lightheaded or dehydrated. If you experience prolonged diarrhea or vomiting, report it to your doctor. To prevent dehydration, make sure to stay well-hydrated, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

If you have diabetes, this product can affect your blood sugar levels. Regularly monitor your blood sugar as directed and share the results with your doctor. Adjustments to your diabetes medication, exercise routine, or diet may be necessary.

This medication may increase your sensitivity to the sun and could elevate your risk of developing skin cancer, especially with prolonged use. To protect your skin, limit sun exposure, avoid tanning beds and sunlamps, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing outdoors. If you get sunburned, notice skin blisters/redness, or see new or changed moles/skin lesions, inform your doctor promptly.

Lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide may affect your potassium levels. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium.

In older adults, the side effects of this drug, especially dizziness and changes in urine output (indicative of kidney problems), may be more pronounced.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, notify your doctor. You should not become pregnant while using lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide, as it may harm the unborn baby. Discuss the potential risks and benefits of this medication during pregnancy with your doctor.

It’s unclear if lisinopril passes into breast milk, while hydrochlorothiazide does but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
