Description

Indications

Olanzapine is employed for alleviating the symptoms of schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 and above. This medication is additionally used to manage bipolar disorder in adults and teenagers aged 13 and older. Olanzapine belongs to a category of drugs referred to as atypical antipsychotics. It operates by modulating the activity of specific natural substances within the brain.

Uses and Dosage

Olanzapine is available in tablet and orally disintegrating tablet forms, both designed for oral consumption.

Typically, it is taken once a day, with or without food, and it’s best to maintain a consistent daily schedule.

Take olanzapine precisely as prescribed, neither more nor less, and avoid exceeding the recommended frequency.

When dealing with the orally disintegrating tablet, do not attempt to push it through the foil. Instead, use dry hands to peel back the foil packaging. Subsequently, place the tablet in your mouth, where it will rapidly dissolve and can be swallowed with or without liquid.

Your doctor may initiate treatment with a low olanzapine dose and gradually adjust it as needed.

While olanzapine can help manage your symptoms, it does not offer a cure for your condition. The full benefits of olanzapine may take several weeks or more to become evident. Continue taking olanzapine even if you start feeling better, and only discontinue it after consulting your doctor, who will likely recommend a gradual dose reduction.

Caution

Before initiating olanzapine treatment, communicate with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies or are specifically allergic to olanzapine. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Prior to using this medication, provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist. Be sure to mention any liver problems, history of seizures, difficulty swallowing, low white blood cell count, dementia, challenges with urination, narrow-angle glaucoma, stomach/intestinal issues, smoking habits, personal or family history of diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels, and any difficulties with breathing during sleep.

This drug has the potential to induce dizziness or drowsiness, and alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Do not engage in activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, until you can do so safely.

This medication may contain aspartame. Individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU) or other conditions requiring aspartame (or phenylalanine) restriction should consult their doctor or pharmacist for guidance on safe medication use.

Olanzapine may reduce sweating, increasing the risk of heat stroke. To prevent overheating, avoid strenuous activity or exercise in hot weather and limit the use of hot tubs. Stay well-hydrated and wear appropriate clothing in hot conditions. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience a persistent fever, changes in mental/mood, headaches, or dizziness.

Teenagers may be more susceptible to certain side effects, including weight gain and increased levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and prolactin.

Older adults are generally more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, which can include drowsiness, constipation, difficulty urinating, confusion, dizziness, and lightheadedness. These side effects can elevate the risk of falls.

During pregnancy, olanzapine should only be used when clearly necessary. Babies born to mothers who have used this drug during the last three months of pregnancy may rarely exhibit symptoms such as muscle stiffness or tremors, drowsiness, feeding/breathing difficulties, or persistent crying. Should you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn, especially within their first month, promptly inform the doctor.

Given that untreated mental/mood disorders can be severe conditions, discontinuing this medication should only be done under the guidance of your doctor. If pregnancy is planned, achieved, or suspected, discuss with your doctor the potential benefits and risks of using this medication.
