Indications
Flurbiprofen is employed to alleviate pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It belongs to a category of medications known as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the body’s production of a substance responsible for pain, fever, and inflammation.
Uses and Dosage
Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication orally, typically 2 to 4 times a day. Ingest the medication with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Refrain from lying down for at least 10 minutes after taking the medication. If you experience stomach upset, consider taking it with food, milk, or an antacid.
The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and response to treatment. To minimize the risk of stomach bleeding and other side effects, take the medication at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible. Do not increase your dose or extend the usage beyond the prescribed period. For chronic conditions like arthritis, adhere to the prescribed regimen. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor or pharmacist.
For specific conditions such as arthritis, it may take up to 2 weeks of consistent use before experiencing the full therapeutic effects.
If you are using this drug “as needed” (not on a regular schedule), remember that pain medications are most effective when taken at the onset of pain. Waiting until the pain intensifies may compromise the effectiveness of the medicine.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- headache
- nervousness or anxiety
- depression
- memory problems
- shaking of a part of the body that you cannot control
- difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- vomiting
- gas
- constipation
- diarrhea
- runny nose
- ringing in the ears
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- fever
- blisters
- rash
- itching
- hives
- swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, throat, or hands
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- pale skin
- fast heartbeat
- excessive tiredness
- unusual bleeding or bruising
- lack of energy
- nausea
- loss of appetite
- pain in the upper right part of the stomach
- flu-like symptoms
- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- cloudy, discolored, or bloody urine
- back pain
- difficult or painful urination
Caution
- Before taking flurbiprofen, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, aspirin, or other NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib), or if you have any other allergies. Inactive ingredients in the product may trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have asthma, bleeding or clotting problems, blood disorders, diabetes, nasal polyps, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver disease, stroke, swelling, or stomach/intestine/esophagus problems.
- Kidney problems may occur with the use of NSAID medications, including flurbiprofen. The risk is higher if you are dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an older adult, or if you take certain medications. Stay hydrated as directed by your doctor to prevent dehydration, and promptly inform your doctor if you notice pink/bloody urine or any unusual change in urine volume.
- This drug may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Alcohol or marijuana can intensify these effects. Avoid driving, using machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness until you can do so safely.
- Flurbiprofen may lead to stomach bleeding. Daily alcohol and tobacco use, particularly when combined with this medication, may elevate the risk of stomach bleeding. Restrict alcohol intake and quit smoking. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for guidance on safe alcohol consumption.
- The medication may increase sensitivity to the sun. Limit sun exposure, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Inform your doctor if you experience sunburn or skin blisters/redness.
- Older adults may be at a higher risk for stomach/intestinal bleeding, kidney problems, heart attack, and stroke when using this drug.
- Before using this medication, women of childbearing age should discuss the benefits and risks with their doctor(s). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. The medication may harm an unborn baby and cause complications during labor/delivery. It is not recommended for use in pregnancy from 20 weeks until delivery. If your doctor determines that you need to use this medication between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible. Avoid using this medication after 30 weeks of pregnancy.
- This medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Is Ansaid the same as ibuprofen (Advil)?
Both Ansaid and ibuprofen (Advil) are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and work well to improve pain and
inflammation. Ansaid is only available with a prescription and ibuprofen (Advil) is available with or without a prescription.
