Ophthalmic levobunolol is employed for the treatment of glaucoma, a condition characterized by increased pressure in the eye that can result in a gradual loss of vision. Levobunolol belongs to a class of medications known as beta blockers. Its mechanism of action involves reducing the pressure within the eye, thereby aiding in the management of glaucoma and preventing potential vision loss.
Uses and Dosage
Ophthalmic levobunolol is provided as a liquid solution to be instilled into the eyes. Typically, levobunolol eye drops are administered once or twice a day.
Use levobunolol eye drops precisely as directed, avoiding deviations such as using more or less than prescribed or increasing the frequency without your doctor’s approval.
It’s important to note that levobunolol eye drops effectively manage glaucoma but do not cure the condition. Even if you feel well, continue using levobunolol eye drops as prescribed. Do not discontinue the use of levobunolol eye drops without consulting your doctor.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- eye stinging or burning
- discomfort, redness, or itching of the eye
- swelling of the eyelids
- decreased vision
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- difficulty breathing
- wheezing
- slow or irregular heartbeat
- faintness
- swelling of the feet and legs
- sudden weight gain
Caution
- Before using levobunolol, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, other beta-blockers, or if you have any other allergies. The product may contain inactive ingredients, like preservatives (e.g., benzalkonium chloride, sulfites), which could trigger allergic reactions or other issues.
- Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have breathing problems, heart problems, blood circulation problems, an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or muscle weakness disorders (such as myasthenia gravis).
- This medication may cause dizziness or temporary blurred vision. Avoid driving, using machinery, or engaging in activities requiring alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely. Limit alcoholic beverages, and discuss marijuana use with your doctor.
- Levobunolol may mask the fast or pounding heartbeat typically associated with low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). The risk is higher if you have diabetes, are vomiting, fasting, or not eating regularly. Other symptoms of low blood sugar, like dizziness and sweating, are not affected by this drug.
- For individuals with diabetes, this product may make it more challenging to control blood sugar levels. Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly as directed by your doctor. Report symptoms of high blood sugar, such as increased thirst or urination, promptly to your doctor. Adjustments to your diabetes medication, exercise program, or diet may be necessary.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when essential, and discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
- It’s uncertain if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Selective beta-blockers mainly work on the heart, rather than other parts of the body. Betagan is a non-selective beta-blocker, so it is more likely to affect other organs like the lungs and cause breathing-related side effects.
