Indications

This medication is indicated for topical application in the treatment of acne. It is a combination of adapalene, a retinoid compound, and benzoyl peroxide, an antibiotic and keratolytic agent. This formulation aims to reduce both the quantity and severity of acne lesions, while facilitating expedited healing of existing pimples.

Adapalene functions by modulating cellular proliferation and diminishing swelling and inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide operates by diminishing the population of acne-causing bacteria, while concurrently inducing desiccation and exfoliation of the skin.

Uses and Dosage

Prescription adapalene is available in various forms including gel, solution, lotion, cream, and pledget for single-use application on the skin. Adapalene is typically applied once daily before bedtime.

Adapalene should be applied exactly as directed, without increasing or decreasing the amount or frequency of application beyond the prescribed dosage by your doctor or the instructions on the package. Exceeding the recommended amount or frequency of adapalene application will not accelerate or enhance results, but may cause skin irritation.

While adapalene effectively manages acne, it does not provide a cure. It is normal for acne to worsen during the initial weeks of treatment, and it may take 8 to 12 weeks or longer to experience the full benefits of adapalene. During the early stages of treatment, adapalene may bring previously unseen pimples to the surface of the skin. Continue using adapalene even if your acne initially worsens or if you observe limited improvement.

Do not apply adapalene to sunburned, broken, or eczema-affected skin. In such cases, refrain from using adapalene until the skin has healed.

Take precautions to prevent contact of adapalene with your eyes, nose, mouth, or vagina. If accidental contact occurs with your eyes, you may experience redness, irritation, or swelling.

During the first 2-4 weeks of treatment, your skin may experience dryness or irritation. If you encounter any stinging, burning, or irritation at any point during treatment, consult your doctor. They may recommend using a moisturizer to alleviate dryness or adjust the frequency of application.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

• hives, itching, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Caution

Prior to using this product, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, specifically to adapalene, benzoyl peroxide, vitamin A-related drugs (such as isotretinoin), or any other substances. Inactive ingredients present in the product may also cause allergic reactions or other complications.

Before initiating treatment with this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have any other skin conditions, such as eczema.

This medication has the potential to bleach hair or colored fabrics, including clothing, bedding, and towels. Caution should be exercised while applying the product near the hairline, during dressing, and when selecting towel and bed sheet colors, especially if the product is left on the skin overnight.

The use of this medication may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Limit exposure to the sun, avoid tanning booths and sunlamps, and make use of sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Promptly inform your doctor if you experience sunburn or develop skin blisters or redness. Wait until your skin has fully recovered from sunburn before resuming use of this product.

While using this product, avoid electrolysis, waxing, and the use of chemical depilatories for hair removal on the treated areas.

As this drug is absorbed through the skin and may pose a risk to an unborn baby, pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should refrain from handling this medication.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Avoid pregnancy while using this medication, as adapalene has the potential to harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant, promptly consult your doctor regarding the risks and benefits associated with the use of this medication.

The passage of this drug into breast milk when applied to the skin is currently unknown. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor for guidance.

How often can I use Epiduo Gel?

Don’t apply Epiduo more than once a day, this won’t make it any more effective or work any quicker. It may also make your skin very red, irritated or scaly.

When is the best time to apply Epiduo Gel?

Epiduo Gel may make your skin more sensitive to sunlight than usual. Therefore, it is best to apply it at night and wash it off in the morning.
