Description

Indications

This medication is a type of female hormone used by women to alleviate menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness and hot flashes. These symptoms occur when the body produces less estrogen.

Women may also use certain estrogen products after menopause to prevent bone loss. In addition to menopausal symptoms, certain estrogen products may also treat cancers, like certain types of prostate cancer and breast cancer that have metastasized to other parts of the body. Women who are unable to produce sufficient estrogen may also use these products.

Uses and Dosage

To take this medication, follow your doctor’s instructions and consume it by mouth, with or without food. You may take it after a meal or with food to avoid stomach upset.

If you are using extended-release tablets, avoid crushing, chewing, or dissolving them, as doing so may release the entire drug at once, which could lead to side effects. Swallow the tablets whole.

Your dosage will be determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

To derive the most benefit from this medication, take it regularly. To help you remember, take it at the same time(s) each day, according to your dosing schedule. Do not increase your dose or use this medication more frequently or for a longer duration than directed.

If your condition does not improve or worsens, inform your doctor.

Prior to using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history, particularly if you have a history of: vaginal bleeding of unknown origin, certain types of cancer (such as breast cancer, ovarian/uterine cancer), blood clots, stroke, heart disease, liver or kidney disease, a family or personal history of a certain type of swelling disorder (angioedema), blood clotting disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol/triglyceride levels, obesity, lupus, underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), mineral imbalance, a specific hormone problem (hypoparathyroidism), uterus problems (such as fibroids, endometriosis), gallbladder disease, asthma, seizures, migraine headaches, a certain blood disorder, or mental/mood disorders (such as dementia, depression).

These circumstances increase your risk of blood clots, particularly if you are taking an estrogen product. You may need to cease taking this medication for a period or take special precautions.
