Imitrex Nasal Spray Dosage

Intranasal:

  • Initial dose: 5 mg, 10 mg, or 20 mg sprayed once into one nostril.
  • The 5 and 20 mg dosages should be sprayed into one nostril at a time; the 10 mg dose should be sprayed into each nostril separately.
  • 40 milligrams per 24 hours is the maximum dosage.

Direction

  • Before using the nasal spray, gently blow your nose to empty it out.
  • Hold the spray bottle tip in one nostril while closing the other with the other hand’s index finger. Then press the spray bottle to spray the drug into one nostril, fully breathing from one nostril as the medication enters it. Spraying into your eyes should be avoided.
  • To keep the medication from pouring out of your nose, tilt your head back for a few seconds.
  • Repeat the procedure with the other nostril.
  • If your migraine pain medication is not working, try a second dose of the nasal spray, but wait at least 1-2 hours before doing so.

Side Effects of Imitrex Nasal Spray

  • High blood pressure, odd taste, irritation, numbness or tingling of the nose or throat, flushing, sensations of tingling, numbness, prickling, burning, exhaustion, weakness, sleepiness, or dizziness are all possible side effects of taking this nasal spray.

If you suffer any of these Imitrex Nasal Spray side effects, you should stop taking it and speak with your doctor about other migraine headache treatment options.
