Description

Indications

Raltegravir is utilized in conjunction with other medications to address human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in both adults and children. Classified as an HIV integrase inhibitor, raltegravir operates by reducing the HIV levels in the bloodstream. While raltegravir does not cure HIV, its administration may diminish the likelihood of acquiring acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-associated ailments, such as severe infections or cancer. When combined with safer sexual practices and lifestyle modifications, the use of these medications can potentially decrease the risk of transmitting the HIV virus to others.

Uses and Dosage

Raltegravir is available in different formulations, including tablets, chewable tablets, and granules for oral suspension, all of which are administered orally. The tablets, chewable tablets, and oral suspension are typically taken twice a day, with or without food. Adhere to a consistent dosing schedule, taking raltegravir at the same time(s) every day.

Take raltegravir precisely as directed by your healthcare provider, avoiding any deviation, such as taking more or less of the medication or increasing the frequency beyond your doctor’s recommendations.

The tablets should be swallowed whole, without splitting, chewing, or crushing them. However, if you are taking the chewable tablets and have difficulty chewing, they can be crushed and mixed with one teaspoon (5 mL) of liquid, such as water, juice, or breast milk, in a clean cup. Within 2 minutes, the tablets will dissolve in the liquid. Use a spoon to crush any remaining tablet pieces and consume the mixture promptly. If any medication is left in the cup, add another teaspoonful (5 mL) of liquid, swirl, and take it immediately.

For the raltegravir oral suspension, you should carefully read the accompanying written instructions before using it for the first time. Empty the contents of one granule packet into the mixing cup and add 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of water. Gently swirl the contents in the mixing cup for 45 seconds, without shaking it. Use the dosing syringe provided to measure the prescribed amount of medication by your doctor. Utilize the prepared mixture within 30 minutes and discard any remaining suspension.

Maintain your raltegravir regimen consistently, even if you feel well. Avoid discontinuing raltegravir or your other anti-HIV medications without consulting your doctor. Interrupting the treatment or skipping doses can worsen your condition, and the virus may develop resistance to the treatment, hampering its effectiveness.
