Lurasidone is indicated for the management of symptoms associated with schizophrenia in adults and children aged 13 years and above. Schizophrenia is characterized by aberrant or unconventional thought processes, reduced interest in life, and intense or unsuitable emotional responses.

This medication is employed for treating depression in adults and children aged 10 years and above who have bipolar disorder, a condition characterized by phases of mania, depression, and other atypical moods. Lurasidone is also administered in combination with lithium or valproate to alleviate depression in adults diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Lurasidone belongs to the class of atypical antipsychotics, and it modulates the function of specific naturally occurring substances in the brain.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally with food as prescribed by your physician, typically once per day. The dosage is determined by your medical condition, response to therapy, age, and concomitant medications.

Inform your doctor and pharmacist of all products you utilize, including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal supplements.

Caution

Before utilizing this medication, explain your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly kidney problems, liver problems, stroke, breast cancer, diabetes (including family history), obesity, low blood pressure, seizures, low white blood cell count, dementia, trouble swallowing, and breathing difficulties during sleep (sleep apnea).

This drug can elicit dizziness or drowsiness. The consumption of alcohol or marijuana can amplify these symptoms. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that necessitate alertness until you can safely perform them.

This medication can reduce perspiration, increasing the likelihood of heatstroke. Avoid activities that may cause you to overheat, such as strenuous labor or exercising in hot weather or using hot tubs. Consume plenty of fluids and wear lightweight clothing in hot weather. Seek a cool place to rest immediately if you overheat. If you experience an unrelenting fever, alterations in mood or mental state, headache, or dizziness, seek medical assistance immediately.

Elderly individuals may be more prone to the side effects of this drug, particularly drowsiness, dizziness, and lightheadedness, which can elevate the risk of falling.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be utilized when necessary. Infants born to mothers who have used this drug during the final trimester of pregnancy may infrequently exhibit symptoms such as muscle stiffness or shakiness, drowsiness, feeding/breathing problems, or constant crying. Notify your doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms in your newborn, especially within their first month.

Since untreated mental/mood disorders can be a severe condition, do not halt medication unless instructed by your physician.
