Indications
Fluocinonide topical is utilized for the treatment of multiple skin conditions, effectively addressing symptoms such as itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort. These conditions include psoriasis, characterized by the development of red, scaly patches on certain areas of the body, and eczema, which induces dry and itchy skin, sometimes leading to the emergence of red, scaly rashes.
This medication belongs to the class of corticosteroids and functions by stimulating natural substances within the skin to mitigate swelling, redness, and itching, thereby providing relief from the associated discomfort.
Uses and Dosage
This medication is intended solely for topical use on the skin. Refrain from applying it to the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed to do so by your doctor.
Before applying the medication, ensure that you wash and dry your hands. Subsequently, clean and dry the affected area thoroughly.
Follow your doctor’s instructions diligently, applying a thin film of the medication to the affected area and gently rubbing it in, typically 1 to 4 times daily depending on the prescribed brand.
Avoid covering, bandaging, or wrapping the treated area unless explicitly advised to do so by your doctor. If you are applying the medication to your hands, you may skip the step of washing your hands after use.
Should you use this medication near the eyes, take care to prevent any contact with the eyes, as it could exacerbate or cause glaucoma. Also avoid getting the medication in your nose or mouth. If any accidental contact occurs in these areas, immediately rinse with an ample amount of water.
Remember to utilize this medication solely for the condition for which it has been prescribed. Refrain from using it for more than 2 weeks consecutively or exceeding the weekly dosage of 60 grams unless expressly directed by your doctor.
If, after 2 weeks of treatment, your condition persists or worsens, inform your doctor about the situation.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, itching, irritation, redness, or drying or cracking of the skin
- acne
- change in skin color
- bruising or shiny skin
- tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
- small white or red bumps on the skin
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- severe skin rash
- redness, swelling, oozing pus or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied fluocinonide
- changes in the way fat is spread around the body
- sudden weight gain
- unusual tiredness
- muscle weakness
- depression and irritability
Caution
Before commencing the use of fluocinonide, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to this medication or other corticosteroids, such as hydrocortisone or prednisone, as well as any other allergies you may have. This product might also contain inactive ingredients that could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other related issues.
Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of poor blood circulation or immune system problems.
Refrain from using this product if you have an ongoing infection or sore in the area to be treated.
In rare instances, prolonged or extensive application of corticosteroid medications may hinder your body’s ability to respond to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or if you encounter a severe illness or injury, make sure to inform your doctor or dentist of your use of this medication or any prior usage within the past few months.
Although it is unlikely, long-term use of this medication may temporarily slow down a child’s growth. If the medication is used for an extended period in a child, schedule regular check-ups with the doctor to monitor the child’s height.
During pregnancy, the use of this medication should be limited to cases where it is clearly necessary. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor before proceeding with the treatment.
The passage of this drug into breast milk when applied topically is not fully understood. Similar medications are known to pass into breast milk when taken orally. If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using this medication.
