Description

Indications

Telmisartan is indicated for the management of hypertension (high blood pressure) either as monotherapy or in combination with other medications. In individuals 55 years or older with a high risk for cardiovascular disease, telmisartan is also prescribed to decrease the likelihood of heart attack, stroke, or death.

Telmisartan is in a class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of certain natural substances that tighten the blood vessels, allowing the blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump more efficiently.

Uses and Dosage

Telmisartan is administered orally in tablet form, usually once daily with or without food. To ensure consistent dosing, take the medication at the same time each day. Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage regimen and refrain from taking more or less than instructed or taking it more frequently than prescribed.

Telmisartan tablets are enclosed in individual blister packs, which should not be opened until it is time to swallow the tablet. To remove the tablet, gently push it through the foil after peeling the paper layer back from the blister pack.

The recommended dosage of telmisartan is gradually increased by the physician, starting with a low dose.

Although telmisartan effectively controls high blood pressure, it does not cure the condition. Blood pressure may start to decrease within the first two weeks of treatment, but it may take up to four weeks to observe the full therapeutic benefit of the medication. Patients must continue taking telmisartan even if they feel better, and should not discontinue use without first consulting with their physician.

Caution

Prior to initiating treatment with telmisartan, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies or hypersensitivity reactions, as this medication may contain inactive ingredients that could elicit allergic reactions or adverse effects.

Inform your physician or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly any liver disease, bile duct blockage, high potassium levels, or dehydration.

This medication may cause dizziness, and use of alcohol or cannabis may exacerbate this effect. Avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you are confident in your ability to do so safely.

Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can cause lightheadedness. Prolonged diarrhea or vomiting should be reported to your doctor.

Telmisartan may elevate potassium levels in the blood. Before taking potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, discuss with your doctor or pharmacist.

Notify your physician if you are pregnant or planning to conceive. Do not use telmisartan during pregnancy, as it may cause harm to the developing fetus. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, contact your doctor promptly to discuss the potential risks and benefits of continued treatment.
