Description

Indications

Guaifenesin is an expectorant indicated for temporary relief of coughs caused by common cold, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses. It should not be used for ongoing coughing due to smoking or chronic respiratory conditions unless specifically directed by a physician.

Guaifenesin works by reducing mucus viscosity and promoting its elimination from the respiratory tract, thereby improving breathing and reducing cough.

This medication does not cure the common cold, and the risk of side effects can be minimized by adhering strictly to the recommended dosage.

Uses and Dosage

Guaifenesin is available in several forms including tablets, capsules, extended-release tablets, dissolving granules, and syrup. The standard tablet, capsule, dissolving granules, and syrup forms should be taken every 4 hours as needed, with or without food. The extended-release tablet should be taken every 12 hours, with or without food.

Take guaifenesin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. You should not take more or less of it or take it more often than recommended. Guaifenesin is also available in combination with antihistamines, cough suppressants, and decongestants. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise you on which product is best for your symptoms.

Guaifenesin products can be dangerous for young children and should not be given to children younger than 4 years of age. If you are giving guaifenesin products to children between the ages of 4 and 11, you should use caution and follow the package instructions carefully.

When taking the liquid form of guaifenesin, do not use a household spoon to measure the dose. Instead, use the measuring spoon or cup that came with the medication or a spoon specifically designed for measuring medication.

The extended-release tablets should be taken whole with a full glass of water and should not be broken, crushed, or chewed. To take the dissolving granules, empty the entire contents of the packet onto your tongue and swallow.

If your symptoms do not improve within 7 days or if you experience additional symptoms such as a high fever, a rash, or a persistent headache, contact your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

Caution

Inform your physician or pharmacist if you have any allergies, particularly to guaifenesin, before starting its use. Be aware of any inactive ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or other adverse effects.

Provide a detailed medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly regarding breathing difficulties, such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma, and smoker’s cough, or any cough accompanied by blood or excessive mucus.

This medication should only be used during pregnancy if deemed necessary by your doctor. A discussion regarding the potential risks and benefits should be held beforehand.
