Description

Indications

Amlodipine is indicated for the management of hypertension in adults and children aged 6 years and older, either as monotherapy or in combination with other medications. It is also used to treat certain forms of angina and coronary artery disease, characterized by narrowed blood vessels that supply blood to the heart.

Amlodipine belongs to the class of medications known as calcium channel blockers, which function by relaxing blood vessels, thereby reducing the workload on the heart. It also improves blood flow to the heart, thereby controlling chest pain.

Uses and Dosage

Take this medication orally, with or without food, according to your doctor’s instructions, usually once a day.

If you are using the liquid form of this medication, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or ask your pharmacist for specific directions. Some brands of the liquid form require shaking before use, while others do not. Use a special measuring device/spoon to measure the dose accurately, and avoid using a household spoon, as it may not provide the correct dose.

The dosage of this medication is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may gradually increase the dosage. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

To derive maximum benefit from this medication, use it regularly. Take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Even if you feel well, keep taking this medication. Most individuals with high blood pressure do not experience symptoms.

If you are taking this medication for angina, you must use it regularly to experience its full effectiveness. It should not be used to treat an angina attack. Instead, use other medications, such as sublingual nitroglycerin, to relieve an angina attack, as directed by your doctor.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens, such as if your blood pressure readings remain high or increase, or if chest pain continues or worsens.

Before initiating the use of this medication, notify your healthcare provider or pharmacist of your medical history, particularly if you have a certain structural heart problem (aortic stenosis), very low blood pressure, or liver disease.

This medication may cause dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana may amplify this effect. Do not operate machinery, drive or engage in any activity that requires alertness until you are confident of doing it safely.
