Description

Indications

The combination of polymyxin B and trimethoprim in ophthalmic application is employed to address bacterial eye infections, encompassing conditions like conjunctivitis (pinkeye) and blepharoconjunctivitis (infection involving the outer membrane of the eyeball, inner eyelid, and outer eyelid). Polymyxin B and trimethoprim belong to the antibiotic class of medications. Their mechanism of action involves the eradication of bacteria responsible for causing infections.

Uses and Dosage

The solution comprising polymyxin B and trimethoprim is intended for instillation in the eye. Typically, it’s applied once to the affected eye(s) every three hours, with a maximum of six doses within a 24-hour period, and this regimen is maintained for 7 to 10 days.

When utilizing ophthalmic polymyxin B and trimethoprim, it’s recommended to administer it around the same time each day. Strictly follow the prescribed guidelines for using ophthalmic polymyxin B and trimethoprim. Avoid deviations such as excessive or insufficient use, or employing it more frequently than advised by your doctor.

After applying polymyxin B and trimethoprim eye drops, exercise caution to prevent the bottle’s tip from making contact with your eye, fingers, face, or any surfaces. Such contact could introduce bacteria into the eye drops. If you suspect contamination of your eye drops, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Anticipate an improvement in your symptoms during the course of treatment. Should your symptoms persist, worsen, or if any additional eye-related issues arise during treatment, promptly contact your doctor.

Continue using ophthalmic polymyxin B and trimethoprim until the prescription is completed, even if you experience symptom relief. Prematurely discontinuing its use may result in incomplete eradication of the infection and the possible development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:

  1. Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
  2. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
  3. Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
  4. Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
  5. Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
  6. Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
  7. Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
  8. Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
  9. Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
