Zidovudine is utilized in conjunction with other drugs to manage human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
Zidovudine is also administered to expectant HIV-positive women to mitigate the likelihood of transmitting the infection to the baby. Classified as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), zidovudine operates by diminishing the quantity of HIV in the bloodstream. While zidovudine doesn’t provide a cure for HIV, it may diminish the probability of developing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and HIV-related conditions, including severe infections or cancer.
Uses and Dosage
Administer this medication orally, either with or without food, as instructed by your doctor, typically 2 to 3 times daily. Consume it with a full glass of water (8 ounces/240 milliliters), unless otherwise directed by your doctor. If using the liquid formulation, accurately measure the dose using a specialized measuring device or spoon; avoid household spoons, as they may lead to incorrect dosing.
The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. For children, the dose is also influenced by their weight. Pregnant individuals might need to take this medication up to 5 times daily. Newborns typically receive the liquid form every 6 hours for the first 6 weeks after birth to prevent infection.
Take this medication at least 2 hours before or after taking clarithromycin, as clarithromycin could hinder the full absorption of zidovudine.

Adhering strictly to your doctor’s instructions, continue taking this medication (and other HIV medications). Do not skip doses. Ensure you refill your prescription before it’s depleted.
Do not exceed or reduce the prescribed dose of this drug or discontinue its usage (or other HIV medications), even briefly, without your doctor’s guidance. Skipping doses or altering the regimen without your doctor’s consent may result in increased viral load, heightened difficulty in treating the infection (drug resistance), or intensified side effects.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- stomach pain or cramps
- heartburn
- diarrhea (especially in children)
- constipation
- headache
- difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- rash
- blistering or peeling of the skin
- hives
- itching
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- swelling of the eyes, face, tongue, lips, or throat
Caution
Prior to commencing zidovudine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, whether to this medication or other substances. Inactive ingredients present in the product may trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
