Description

Indications

Vilazodone is prescribed for the treatment of depression. It belongs to the class of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and acts as a partial agonist for serotonin receptors. By facilitating the restoration of certain natural substances in the brain, such as serotonin neurotransmitters, vilazodone can enhance your mood, regulate your sleep patterns and appetite, boost your energy levels, and potentially rekindle your passion for daily activities.

Uses and Dosage

Vilazodone is available in tablet form to be taken orally. Take the medication once a day with food, around the same time each day. Vilazodone should be taken exactly as prescribed, neither more nor less frequently.

Typically, the initial dose of vilazodone will be low, and it may be gradually increased, but no more than once every seven days.

While vilazodone can help control depression, it does not cure it. It may take some time for you to feel its full benefits, so continue taking it even if you start feeling better. Do not stop taking vilazodone without consulting your doctor as they will likely reduce your dose gradually.

Suddenly discontinuing vilazodone could result in withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, headache, confusion, irritability, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, seizures, or burning sensation in hands or feet. Inform your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms when tapering off vilazodone or shortly after discontinuation.

Caution

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you may have before taking vilazodone as it may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of your medical history before taking vilazodone, particularly if you have or have had bipolar disorder, a family history of suicide attempts, seizures, glaucoma (angle-closure type), or peptic ulcer disease with intestinal bleeding.

Vilazodone may cause dizziness, and consuming alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Until you can perform tasks safely, avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness.

Older adults may be more prone to bleeding side effects and develop hyponatremia, a salt imbalance, particularly if they’re also taking diuretics. This condition could raise the risk of falling.

Using vilazodone during pregnancy is only recommended when necessary, as it may pose a risk to the unborn baby. Withdrawal symptoms, such as seizures, muscle stiffness, constant crying, or feeding/breathing difficulties, may be observed in babies born to mothers who used this drug in the last trimester. Promptly notify your doctor if you detect any of these symptoms in your newborn.

Stopping medication for mental/mood disorders such as depression can be risky, so don’t discontinue using vilazodone unless directed by your doctor. If you’re planning to conceive, already pregnant, or suspect you might be, discuss with your doctor the pros and cons of using this drug during pregnancy.

It’s uncertain whether vilazodone passes into breast milk. Before breastfeeding, consult your doctor.
