Wouldn't it be amazing if there was some
'magical' way to prevent the thousands of little swimming sperma from reaching their ultimate finish line? Up till now, birth control measures were mostly available for women while men had to partner with unfaithful condoms which would give up on them 3% of the time. A contraceptive can only be termed effective if it were to shrink the sperm count to zero. Couples look for birth control measures that neither mingles with their hormones nor cause them to have any less fun with their partners.
Scientists have now made an extraordinary discovery in terms of birth control with a little bit of twist – it's the men who have their swimmers suppressed. Two types of novel birth control methods have emerged that could be declared as safe, effective, and free from side effects.
RISUG
RISUG (Reversible Inhibition of Sperm under Guidance) is a minimally invasive procedure that involves injecting a polymer made from styrene maleic anhydride (SMA) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), known as Vasalgel™, into the vas deferens near the testicles. This polymer causes sperm to lose their tail and unable to swim to reach the egg.
RISUG is currently being tested clinically in India where it has been appraised for its success. For men, not only does it cost less on their pockets but spending a couple of minutes on the operating bed would ensure their tough sperms are constrained. A quick injection of water and baking soda is enough to flush out the Vasalgel when couples are willing to have little bundles of joy.
JQ1
Originally used for anti-cancer treatments, JQ1 compound’s purpose for controlling the mobility of witty little sperms was revealed by a mere accident. Experiments have been conducted on mice in Texas and successful results have been achieved in hindering sperm production. JQ1 compound has been proved to result in no side effects and if discontinued can cause sperm to produce normally. Before JQ1 injections and pills can be tested on humans, research has yet to be done to create a pure compound.
Should Men Consider Birth Control?
Contraceptives for men are forward leap in the realm of birth control. Previous birth control options creams, injections, and even implants in the male reproductive system had some minor side effects. These two amazing discoveries from India and Texas have the potential to revolutionize the birth control industry by allowing men to take more responsibility in relationship.
With higher success rates of these birth control methods, men might be able to enjoy being sexually active without leaving behind their anxious swimmers to win the race. The development of safe birth control for men is surely a game-changer.
