What is Acetazolamide/Diamox used for?

This medicine is used to treat glaucoma (excessive pressure in the eyes), epilepsy (for both brief and unlocalized seizures), and fluid retention due to congestive heart failure or drugs. It is also used to prevent or relieve the symptoms of acute mountain sickness in climbers attempting a rapid climb and those who feel sick even though they are making a gradual climb.

When should Acetazolamide/Diamox not be taken?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or to similar medications you have serious liver or kidney disease, including cirrhosis you have low blood levels of sodium or potassium you have excessive chloride in your blood you have angle-closure glaucoma

What precautions should I follow when taking Acetazolamide/Diamox?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement if you are taking high doses of aspirin if you have lung disease or difficulty breathing if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Acetazolamide/Diamox?

Do not take this medicine with aspirin as it can result in loss of appetite, sluggishness, and rapid breathing to unresponsiveness and can be fatal.

What are the side effects of Acetazolamide/Diamox?

Most severe:  Convulsions; severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, tongue, and lips; difficulty breathing) dark, bloody stools; blood in the urine; vision changes.

Most common:  Tingling in the hands and feet; ringing in the ears; changes in hearing; loss of appetite; changes in taste; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; frequent urination.

Other:  Drowsiness; confusion; sensitivity to sunlight; fever.

How should I take Acetazolamide/Diamox?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated, your age, and weight. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Drink plenty of water or fluids while taking this medicine. Contact your doctor at once if any of the following occur: Allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; fever; crystals in the urine; infection (fever, chills, sore throat). Larger doses do not increase the medicine's effects, but may increase its side effects. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Temporary changes in vision have occurred. This stops when the dose is reduced or you stop taking this medicine. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. This medicine may cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid long periods of exposure to sun. Use sunscreens and wear protective clothing. If you are also taking high doses of aspirin with this medicine, contact your doctor if any of the following occur: Loss of appetite; fast breathing; lack of energy. Lab tests may be required to monitor therapy. Be sure to keep appointments. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your doctor. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes any herbal preparations or dietary supplements. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
