What is Ceftin Oral Suspension/Cefuroxime Axetil used for?

This medicine is used to treat sinus, skin, lung, urinary tract, ear, and throat infections. It may also be used to treat Lyme disease and gonorrhea.

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine or similar medications

What precautions should I follow when taking Ceftin Oral Suspension/Cefuroxime Axetil?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are allergic to penicillins if you are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have any other medical condition like gastrointestinal disease

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Ceftin Oral Suspension/Cefuroxime Axetil?

The tablet and oral suspension forms of this medicine are not equivalent. Do not substitute one for the other. Do not take cefuroxime if you have ever had an allergic reaction to another cephalosporin or to a penicillin.

What are the side effects of Ceftin Oral Suspension/Cefuroxime Axetil?

Most severe:  Severe allergic reaction (skin rashes, hives, tightness in throat and chest, shortness of breath, bronchospasm.

Most common:  Diarrhea/loose stools; nausea; vomiting; stomach pain.

Other: Headache, dizziness

How should I take Ceftin Oral Suspension/Cefuroxime Axetil?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or how often you take the medicine, talk with your health care provider. Tablet may be taken with or without food. Tablet have a strong, bitter taste. Swallow Tablet whole. Continue to use until all of the prescribed medicine has been taken. Failure to take all of the medicine may prevent complete elimination of the bacteria, allowing the infection to return. If severe diarrhea, stomach pain/cramps, nausea, vomiting or bloody stools occur, contact your health care provider at once. This could be a symptom of a serious side effect requiring instant medical attention. Do not treat diarrhea without talking with your health care provider. Diabetic patients - This medicine may interfere with tests for sugar in the urine and give false test results. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist.
