What is Lamictal/Lamotrigine used for?

This medicine is used alone to treat partial seizures in adults and with other medications to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in children and adults.

Store between 59 to 77 degrees F in a dry place. Protect from light and heat.

What precautions should I follow when taking Lamictal/Lamotrigine?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine if you have liver, kidney, or heart problems if you have any other medical condition

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Lamictal/Lamotrigine?

This medicine has been known to cause serious and life-threatening rash in adults and children less than 16 years of age. Stop taking this medicine and report any signs of allergic reaction to your doctor at once.

What are the side effects of Lamictal/Lamotrigine?

Most severe:  Severe rash; seizures; severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of the mouth, face, tongue, and lips).

Most common:  Dizziness; clumsiness; drowsiness; headache; double vision; blurred vision; nausea; vomiting; rash; runny nose; anxiety; sleeplessness; infection; pain; weight loss; chest pain; painful menstruation; weakness; indigestion; accidental injury; tremor; rapid eye movement; swollen lymph nodes; diarrhea; itching; sinus infection. Children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome: Sore throat; infection; rash; breathing difficulties; accidental injury; constipation; flu; clumsiness.

Other:  Fever; stomach pain; aggravated reaction; depression; speech disorder; disturbed concentration; increased cough; vaginal infection; abnormal menstrual cycle.

How should I take Lamictal/Lamotrigine?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Swallow Tablet whole. This medicine has a bitter taste. This medication may be taken with or without food. Notify your doctor at once if seizures become worse or at the first sign of a rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, hives, painful sores in the mouth or around the eyes, or swelling of the lips or tongue. This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medication. Do not take more medication than prescribed unless advised to do so by your doctor or health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
