Vaginal clindamycin is employed for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, an infection resulting from the overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vagina. This medication belongs to the class of drugs known as lincomycin antibiotics, acting by slowing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria.
Uses and Dosage
This product is designed for vaginal use exclusively. Before and after each application, ensure you wash your hands. Avoid contact of the cream with your eyes, and if accidental contact occurs, promptly rinse your eyes with plenty of water.
Contact your doctor if eye irritation persists.
Prepare the applicator with the cream following the provided directions. Insert the applicator deeply into the vagina and press the plunger to release the medication. Use this product as instructed by your doctor, typically once a day before bedtime. Discard each applicator after use, or if you have only one, clean it with warm soapy water and rinse thoroughly—avoid boiling or using hot water for cleaning.
To minimize the risk of medication leakage, lie down promptly after use.
For optimal effectiveness, antibiotics work best when maintained at a consistent level in your body. Administer this drug at regular intervals.
Continue using this medication for the entire prescribed duration, even if symptoms alleviate within a few days. Prematurely stopping the medication may lead to a recurrence of the infection.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- white patches in the mouth
- thick, white vaginal discharge
- burning, itching, and swelling of the vagina
- burning, painful urination
- vaginal pain
- constipation
- nausea
- headache
- back pain
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- stomach pain or cramping
- diarrhea
- watery or bloody stools
- fever
- blisters
- rash
- hives
- itching
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
Caution
- Before using clindamycin, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether to clindamycin, lincomycin, or other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication, especially if you have intestinal diseases like C. difficile-associated diarrhea, enteritis, or ulcerative colitis.
- Avoid vaginal intercourse, tampons, or douches while using this medication, as they can interfere with the effectiveness of the cream.
- The mineral oil in this product may weaken rubber products such as latex condoms and diaphragms, leading to potential failure. Refrain from using these products during treatment and for 72 hours afterward. Consult your doctor for advice on alternative forms of barrier protection or birth control, such as polyurethane condoms, during this period.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly necessary. Oral antibiotics are sometimes used to treat vaginal infections during pregnancy, especially in high-risk pregnancies. Consult your doctor for more details and to discuss the potential risks and benefits.
- It is unclear whether the medication in this product passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding for personalized guidance.
