Clobetasol topical is employed to address the itchiness, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort associated with diverse scalp and skin conditions. These conditions encompass psoriasis, a skin ailment characterized by the formation of red, scaly patches on specific body areas, and eczema, a skin disorder leading to dryness, itchiness, and the occasional development of red, scaly rashes. Clobetasol belongs to a category of medications known as corticosteroids.
Its mechanism of action involves activating natural substances in the skin to diminish swelling, redness, and itching.
Uses and Dosage
Clobetasol topical is available in various forms, including cream, gel, ointment, lotion, foam, and spray for skin application, as well as foam, spray, solution (liquid), and shampoo for scalp use.
Typically, clobetasol cream, gel, ointment, lotion, foam, solution (liquid), and spray are applied twice a day, while clobetasol shampoo is usually applied once daily.
Adhere to the prescribed usage of clobetasol topical; avoid applying more or less frequently than directed by your doctor and refrain from using it on other body areas or for different skin conditions unless explicitly instructed.
Your skin condition should show improvement within the initial two weeks of treatment. If your symptoms persist, contact your doctor.
To apply clobetasol topical, use a small amount of cream, ointment, gel, lotion, foam, or spray to cover the affected skin area with a thin, even film and gently rub it in.
For foam, spray, or solution (liquid) application on the scalp, part your hair, apply a small amount to the affected area, and rub it in gently. Shield the area from washing and rubbing until the foam, spray, or solution (liquid) dries.
Before using clobetasol foam for the first time, carefully read the provided instructions. Seek clarification from your doctor or pharmacist if needed.
When using the shampoo on your scalp, part your hair, apply a small amount to the affected area, and rub it in gently.
After 15 minutes, wet your hair, create a lather with your fingers, and rinse the shampoo thoroughly with plenty of water.
Do not cover your head with a shower cap, bathing cap, or towel while the shampoo is on your scalp. You can wash your hair as usual after applying and rinsing off clobetasol shampoo.
Be cautious with clobetasol foam, as it may catch fire. Avoid open flames, fire, and refrain from smoking during application and for a short time afterward.
This medication is intended solely for skin use. Prevent contact with your eyes or mouth, and do not swallow it. Avoid using it in genital and rectal areas, as well as in skin creases and armpits unless directed by your doctor.
Do not apply other skin preparations or products on the treated area without consulting your doctor.
Unless advised by your doctor, refrain from wrapping or bandaging the treated area, as it may heighten side effects.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, itching, irritation, redness, or dryness of the skin
- acne
- tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
- small white or red bumps on the skin
- bruising or shiny skin
- red or purple blotches or lines under the skin
- thin, fragile, or dry skin
- changes in skin color
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- redness, swelling, oozing pus or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied clobetasol
- severe rash
- skin sores
- changes in the way fat is spread around the body
- sudden weight gain
- unusual tiredness
- muscle weakness
- depression and irritability
Caution
- Before initiating the use of clobetasol, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergies you may have, whether to clobetasol itself, other steroids, or any other substances. Inactive ingredients in the product could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
- Prior to using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have conditions such as poor blood circulation, diabetes, or other skin issues like rosacea or perioral dermatitis. Inform them if you have immune system problems.
- Avoid using clobetasol if there is an existing infection or sore in the area intended for treatment.
- Prolonged use of corticosteroid medications over extensive skin areas or an extended period may potentially reduce your body’s ability to respond to physical stress. Before undergoing surgery or emergency treatment, or if you experience a significant illness or injury, notify your doctor or dentist about your use of this medication, either currently or within the past few months.
- Although uncommon, prolonged use of this medication in children may temporarily slow down their growth. Regular check-ups with a doctor are recommended to monitor your child’s height.
- During pregnancy, use this medication only when absolutely necessary, and discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
- The passage of this drug into breast milk when applied topically is not well-established. Similar medications pass into breast milk when taken orally. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding if you are using this medication on your skin.

Can I use Clobex Spray with another topical steroid?
Don’t use multiple steroid topical products or Clobex Spray products at once without speaking to your provider. Using too much topical steroid can cause you to absorb more of the medication, which can lead to serious skin issues.
