Psyllium is indicated for the treatment of constipation. It works by increasing the bulk of the stool, which facilitates intestinal movement, as well as by increasing the water content of the stool, making it softer and easier to pass.
This medication has additionally been utilized in conjunction with a balanced diet for the treatment of high cholesterol levels.
Uses and Dosage
Psyllium is available in various forms, including powder, granules, capsules, liquid, and wafers, and is to be taken orally. The recommended frequency of consumption is one to three times daily.
The powder and granules should be mixed with 8 ounces (240 milliliters) of a desirable liquid, such as fruit juice, immediately prior to consumption.
Wafers should be thoroughly chewed. For effective results and to avoid potential side effects, consume at least 8 ounces (240 milliliters) of liquid when taking psyllium.
Psyllium should not be consumed for a duration exceeding one week unless directed by your physician.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
