Description

Indications

Pioglitazone is utilized in combination with a proper diet and exercise routine, and sometimes with other medications, to treat type 2 diabetes, a condition in which the body is unable to utilize insulin effectively and consequently cannot regulate the glucose levels in the bloodstream. Pioglitazone belongs to the class of medicines known as thiazolidinediones, which function by boosting the body’s insulin sensitivity, a natural substance that aids in regulating blood sugar levels.

This medication is not used to treat type 1 diabetes, a condition in which the body does not generate insulin and hence is incapable of controlling the amount of sugar in the bloodstream, or diabetic ketoacidosis, a severe condition that may develop when high blood sugar levels are not treated.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, according to the instructions of your physician, generally once daily. The dosage is dependent on your medical condition, response to treatment, and whether you are taking other diabetes medications. Your physician will alter your dose based on your blood sugar levels to determine the optimal dosage for you. Follow your physician’s instructions precisely.

To obtain the most benefit from this medication, consume it on a regular basis. Remember to take it at the same time each day.

If you are already taking another diabetes medication, such as metformin or a sulfonylurea, closely adhere to your physician’s instructions on discontinuing or continuing the old medication and commencing this medication. Adhere closely to the medication treatment plan, meal plan, and exercise program recommended by your physician.

Check your blood sugar levels as directed by your physician and keep track of the findings, sharing them with your physician. Inform your physician if your blood sugar measurements are excessively high or low, as your dosage or treatment may require modification.

It may take up to 2 to 3 months for the full advantages of this medication to take effect.
