Description

Indications

Emollients topical is used as a moisturizer in the treatment and prevention of dry, rough, scaly, itchy skin, and minor skin irritations, such as diaper rash and skin burns caused by radiation therapy. The loss of water in the outermost layer of the skin causes dryness. Moisturizers operate by creating a lipid barrier on the surface of the skin that captures moisture within the skin.

Emollients, which are substances that soften and moisturize the skin while reducing itching and flaking, are the active agents in this medication. Certain components, such as zinc oxide and white petrolatum, serve mainly to protect the skin from irritants.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to use it may be necessary to shake certain products. Consult the label to determine if the bottle should be shaken well before use.

Apply the product to affected areas of the skin as required, or in accordance with instructions on the label or those provided by your doctor. The frequency with which you apply the medication is dependent on the product and your skin condition. In order to address dry hands, it may be necessary to use the product each time you wash your hands, applying it throughout the day.

If the product is being used to treat diaper rash, ensure that the diaper area is cleaned thoroughly prior to use, and allow it to dry before application.

In cases where the product is being used to help treat radiation skin burns, verify with radiation personnel whether this medication can be applied prior to radiation therapy.

Apply the product only to the skin, and avoid sensitive areas such as your eyes, inside your mouth/nose, and the vaginal/groin area, unless directed otherwise by the label or your doctor.

To gain the maximum benefit from the medication, use it regularly. Most moisturizers require water in order to function effectively. Apply the product to damp skin following bathing or showering.

If your condition persists or worsens, or if you suspect that you may have a serious medical issue, seek immediate medical attention.
