Indications
Clobetasol topical is indicated for the treatment of a range of scalp and skin conditions characterized by itching, redness, dryness, crusting, scaling, inflammation, and discomfort. These conditions include psoriasis, a dermatological disorder characterized by the formation of red, scaly patches on various areas of the body, and eczema, a skin disease that causes dryness, itchiness, and occasionally the development of red, scaly rashes.
Clobetasol belongs to the class of medications known as corticosteroids. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of natural substances within the skin, resulting in the reduction of swelling, redness, and itching.
Uses and Dosage
This shampoo is intended exclusively for use on the scalp, and caution should be exercised to avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Do not bandage, wrap, or cover the affected area. Refrain from using shower caps or bathing caps, unless specifically directed by your doctor.
To apply the shampoo, follow your doctor’s instructions and squeeze the bottle over the affected area of your dry scalp, ensuring a thin film is distributed. This is typically done once daily. Gently massage the shampoo into the affected area, allowing it to remain on the scalp for 15 minutes.
After applying the shampoo, wash your hands immediately. Then, wet your scalp, create a lather, and thoroughly rinse off the shampoo. Additionally, rinse any other body parts, such as hands, face, neck, and shoulders, that may have come into contact with the shampoo.
While it is not necessary to use another non-medicated shampoo to clean your hair, you may do so if desired.
Avoid applying this medication to your face, neck, groin, or underarms. Exercise caution when using this medication near the eyes or lips, as contact with these areas can exacerbate or cause glaucoma. In the event that the shampoo comes into contact with your eyes or lips, thoroughly rinse them with an ample amount of water.
To mitigate the risk of potential side effects, adhere to the prescribed dosage and duration of use. Do not exceed 50 milliliters (1.75 ounces) of shampoo per week. Treatment with this medication should be limited to a maximum of 4 weeks. If your condition fails to improve within this timeframe, consult your doctor for further guidance.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- burning, itching, irritation, redness, or dryness of the skin
- acne
- tiny red bumps or rash around the mouth
- small white or red bumps on the skin
- bruising or shiny skin
- red or purple blotches or lines under the skin
- thin, fragile, or dry skin
- changes in skin color
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- redness, swelling, oozing pus or other signs of skin infection in the place where you applied clobetasol
- severe rash
- skin sores
- changes in the way fat is spread around the body
- sudden weight gain
- unusual tiredness
- muscle weakness
- depression and irritability
Caution
Prior to using clobetasol, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to clobetasol, other steroids, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before initiating the use of this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of poor blood circulation, diabetes, other skin or scalp conditions (such as rosacea, perioral dermatitis), or immune system disorders.
Do not use this medication if there is an infection or sore in the area that requires treatment.
Prolonged or extensive use of corticosteroid medications on the skin can occasionally impede the body’s response to physical stress. Prior to undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or in the event of a severe illness or injury, inform your doctor or dentist about your use of this medication or any recent use within the past few months.
Although uncommon, the long-term use of this medication can potentially slow down a child’s growth temporarily. Have regular check-ups with a doctor to monitor the child’s height during prolonged use.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used if clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk when applied to the scalp or skin. Similar medications can enter breast milk when taken orally. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding to evaluate the potential risks and benefits.
