Description

Indications

Warfarin is a medication that functions to decrease the likelihood of clot formation in the blood. It is indicated for conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolus (PE), and for the prevention of new clot formation within the body. By inhibiting the formation of harmful blood clots, the risk of stroke or heart attack is significantly reduced.

While commonly referred to as a blood thinner, the more precise term for warfarin is an anticoagulant. The medication functions by decreasing the levels of certain substances (clotting proteins) in the blood, facilitating the smooth flow of blood throughout the body.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, according to the instructions provided by your healthcare professional or doctor, usually once per day. Adhere to the prescribed administration instructions exactly as directed. Do not alter the dose, frequency, or discontinue usage unless instructed to do so by your doctor.

The dosage of this medication is contingent on your medical condition, laboratory tests (such as INR), and response to therapy. Your doctor or healthcare provider will closely monitor you during medication use to determine the appropriate dosage.

Consistent usage of this medication is critical to achieve maximum therapeutic benefit. Take the medication at the same time every day to facilitate better adherence.

Maintaining a balanced and consistent diet is crucial when taking Warfarin. Certain foods can alter the medication’s efficacy and affect treatment and dosage. Abruptly increasing or decreasing consumption of vitamin K-rich foods should be avoided. Consult your doctor before attempting to lose weight.

As this medication can be absorbed through the skin and lungs and potentially cause harm to an unborn child, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not handle this medication or inhale the dust from the tablets.

Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, particularly if you have any blood disorders such as hemophilia or anemia, bleeding problems, blood vessel disorders like aneurysms, recent major injury or surgery, kidney or liver disease, alcohol use, mental or mood disorders including memory problems, and frequent falls or injuries.

Before undergoing any surgical or dental procedures, inform your healthcare provider of your warfarin use.

Drinking alcohol while taking warfarin may increase your risk of stomach bleeding and affect how the medication works. Limit alcoholic beverages and ask your doctor or pharmacist about the amount of alcohol you can safely consume.

If you experience any illness or infection that causes fever, vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than two days, or if you start using antibiotics, contact your healthcare provider immediately. These conditions may affect how warfarin works.

Use caution with sharp objects like razors and nail cutters to avoid injury or bleeding, as this medication can cause heavy bleeding. If you fall or injure yourself, particularly if you hit your head, contact your doctor immediately.

Older adults may be at a higher risk for bleeding while using warfarin.

Warfarin is not recommended for use during pregnancy due to serious, possibly fatal harm to an unborn baby. If you are planning pregnancy, consult with your doctor to develop a management plan for your condition. If you become pregnant while taking warfarin, inform your doctor immediately.

Only small amounts of warfarin may pass into breast milk, it is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
