Indications
Mometasone and formoterol combination medication is employed for the treatment of asthma and the enhancement of lung function. This therapeutic combination is utilized in cases where a patient’s asthma has not been adequately managed with other asthma medications, or when the severity of the condition necessitates the administration of multiple medications on a daily basis.
Mometasone, classified as a corticosteroid, functions by inhibiting lung inflammation, which is responsible for asthma attacks. Formoterol, categorized as an adrenergic bronchodilator, alleviates coughing, breathlessness, and respiratory difficulties by facilitating increased airflow through the bronchial tubes.
Uses and Dosage
Please adhere to the following instructions to ensure proper usage of the inhaler. Priming the inhaler is necessary when using it for the first time or if it has not been used for over 5 days. Avoid spraying the medication into your eyes.
Before each use, vigorously shake the inhaler. Remove the cap and follow your doctor’s instructions for inhaling the medication orally. Typically, it is taken twice daily (in the morning and evening). Always replace the cap securely after each use.
If your prescribed dose consists of 2 puffs, allow at least one minute between them. When using other inhalers simultaneously, maintain a minimum interval of 1 minute between the usage of each medication, ensuring this particular drug is used last.
To prevent dry mouth, hoarseness, and oral yeast infections, gargle and rinse your mouth with water after each use, spitting out the rinse water. Do not swallow the rinse water.
For weekly maintenance of the inhaler, gently wipe the exterior of the mouthpiece with a dry tissue. Avoid using water or other liquids, and refrain from disassembling the inhaler.
To derive the maximum benefits from this medication, use it regularly at evenly spaced intervals. Establish a routine by taking it at the same times every day to aid in remembering. Do not increase your dose, use the medication more frequently, or discontinue its use without consulting your doctor first. Do not use other long-acting beta agonists while using this medication.
If you are currently taking another corticosteroid orally (such as prednisone), do not discontinue its use unless specifically instructed by your doctor. Abruptly stopping such medications may worsen certain conditions (e.g., asthma, allergies) and result in withdrawal symptoms (e.g., weakness, weight loss, nausea, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, dizziness). To minimize withdrawal effects, your doctor may gradually reduce the dosage of your previous medication after you begin using mometasone/formoterol. Promptly inform your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any withdrawal symptoms.
If you have been using a quick-relief inhaler (such as albuterol or salbutamol in some countries) on a regular daily schedule (e.g., 4 times daily), discontinue this schedule and only use the quick-relief inhaler as needed for sudden shortness of breath or asthma attacks. Consult your doctor for specific instructions.
It may take up to 1 week or longer before you experience the full benefits of this drug. Inform your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

- pain or tenderness around the eyes and cheekbones
- sore throat
- stuffy or runny nose
- tightness of the chest

Caution
Prior to initiating this medication, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to mometasone, formoterol, arformoterol, or other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that can potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have or have had: current or past infections, high blood pressure, heart disease, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), seizures, osteoporosis (bone loss), eye problems, diabetes, aneurysm, or a specific adrenal gland tumor known as pheochromocytoma.
Formoterol has the potential to cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm known as QT prolongation. QT prolongation can rarely lead to serious rapid or irregular heartbeat, along with other symptoms (such as severe dizziness or fainting) that require immediate medical attention.
Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may further increase the risk of QT prolongation. This risk may be heightened when certain medications (such as diuretics or “water pills”) are used or in the presence of conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting.
This medication may mask signs of infection and make you more susceptible to infections or exacerbate existing ones. Avoid contact with individuals who have easily transmissible infections (such as chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, or the flu). Inform your doctor if you have been exposed to an infection or for further guidance.
If you have recently switched from an orally administered corticosteroid (such as prednisone tablets) to this inhaler within the past 12 months, or if you have been using this product in higher-than-usual doses for an extended period, your body may have reduced responsiveness to physical stress. Prior to undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or in the event of a serious illness or injury, inform your doctor or dentist about your use of this medication or recent use of an orally administered corticosteroid within the past 12 months. Alert your doctor immediately if you experience unusual or extreme fatigue or weight loss. Carry a warning card or wear a medical ID bracelet indicating your use or past use of corticosteroid medications.
Prolonged use of this medication may temporarily inhibit a child’s growth. Uncontrolled asthma can also impede growth. Regularly consult the doctor to monitor your child’s height.
Older adults may exhibit heightened sensitivity to the side effects of this medication, particularly QT prolongation.
During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
It is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
