Description

Indications

Beclomethasone belongs to the class of drugs known as corticosteroids and is used to prevent and control symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath caused by asthma. By directly reducing irritation and swelling of the airways in the lungs, it facilitates easier breathing. Use this medication regularly to prevent breathing problems such as attacks of wheezing or shortness of breath, it is not intended for immediate relief during an asthma attack.

Uses and Dosage

Beclomethasone is typically delivered via an aerosol inhaler that is used to inhale the medication orally. Be sure to use beclomethasone exactly as directed, without using more or less of it or more often than recommended by your doctor.

During your beclomethasone inhalation treatment, consult your doctor on how you should use your other oral and inhaled medications for asthma. If you were previously taking an oral steroid like dexamethasone, methylprednisolone (Medrol), or prednisone (Rayos), your doctor may want to gradually decrease your steroid dose after starting beclomethasone.

Beclomethasone is effective in controlling symptoms of asthma but does not provide a cure. Improvement may be experienced as early as 24 hours after using the medication, but it may take 1 to 4 weeks of regular use to experience the full effects.

Continue to use beclomethasone even if you feel fine and don’t stop using it without consulting your doctor. Notify your doctor if your symptoms or your child’s symptoms do not improve within the first 4 weeks or worsen.

Although beclomethasone helps to prevent asthma attacks, it does not stop an asthma attack that has already started. Your doctor will prescribe a short-acting inhaler to use during asthma attacks. Notify your doctor if your asthma worsens during your treatment.

Do not use your beclomethasone inhaler when you are close to a flame or a heat source, as the inhaler may explode when exposed to high temperatures.

Each beclomethasone inhaler is intended to deliver 50, 100, or 120 inhalations, depending on its size. After the labeled number of inhalations has been used, subsequent inhalations may not contain the appropriate quantity of medication. Keep track of the number of inhalations you have used, and divide the number of inhalations in your inhaler by the number of inhalations you use each day to estimate the number of days your inhaler will last. Even if it still contains some liquid and continues to release a spray when pressed, discard the inhaler after you have used the labeled number of inhalations.
