Description

Indications

Carprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is frequently prescribed by veterinarians to alleviate osteoarthritis (OA) and other types of inflammation in canines. It works by decreasing inflammation, thus easing your dog’s discomfort. After surgery, your veterinarian may also recommend carprofen to manage post-operative pain.

Aside from dogs, carprofen is also employed off-label to treat pain and inflammation in a variety of other species, including horses, cows, sheep, birds, rabbits, ferrets, small mammals, and reptiles. Off-label or extra-label use refers to the practice of administering medication in a way or to a species not specified on the medication label. Off- or extra- label use of a medication can only be done by a veterinarian.

Uses and Dosage

To ensure proper administration of carprofen to your dog, adhere to the instructions on the drug label or those given by your veterinarian. The dosage and treatment plan prescribed by your veterinarian will be based on your dog’s weight and the cause of their pain.

Carprofen chewable tablets are generally well-liked by dogs and can be given as treats. If your dog is reluctant to take the tablets, you may hide them in a small amount of appetizing food.

Although carprofen can be given with or without food, giving it with food can help prevent stomach upset.

Follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for the duration of carprofen administration, which may be long-term for dogs with OA.

If your dog is still experiencing pain or reluctance to play, climb stairs, or jump, discuss the possibility of additional pain medication with your veterinarian.

In the event that you forget to give your dog a dose of carprofen, administer it when you recall. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not administer extra or double doses.

Side Effects

While carprofen is generally well-tolerated by canines, be aware that severe side effects may arise. If you observe any of the following signs, contact your veterinarian:

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • decreased appetite
  • decreased energy level (lethargy)
  • dark, black, or tar-like stools
  • increased thirst
  • increased urination or accidents inside the house
  • pale gum color (very light pink, white, or grey gums)
  • yellowing of the gums, skin, or whites of the eyes
  • incoordination or weakness
  • seizures
  • any behavioral changes

Caution

Carprofen must not be administered to pets with bleeding disorders such as Von Willebrand disease or low platelet counts, or to those who have shown allergic reactions to it or other NSAIDs in the same class.

For pets younger than 6 weeks of age, older pets, pregnant or lactating pets, dehydrated pets, or those with pre-existing diseases, especially liver, kidney, heart, or gastrointestinal disease, carprofen must be used with caution.

Caution must be exercised when using carprofen in pets who have undergone bone surgery or suffered bone injury, as it may interfere with bone healing.

Use of carprofen in cats or in pets taking other NSAIDs or corticosteroids should be done with extreme caution, if at all.
