Whether you have recurring back pain or just an occasional bout, there’s no doubt about it – back pain can be excruciating. When it happens to you, a maximum two or three days of bedrest usually works better than long-term bedrest. Activity, increased gradually, actually causes pain to decrease! While you are resting, lie on your stomach, at least some of the time. This position extends your back. (If this position worsens your pain, as it may for individuals with facet joint syndrome or spinal stenosis, STOP AND CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR.) The rest of the time, find a neutral position on your side or on your back and place a couple of pillows under your knees. Avoid twisting and reaching for things; this can strain your back more. If stomach upset occurs, take with food. This medicine can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Use caution while driving or performing other tasks requiring alertness, coordination, or physical dexterity. Avoid alcohol and other medicines (sedatives, tranquilizers) that cause drowsiness.
