Description

Indications

Pilocarpine is employed to alleviate dry mouth resulting from radiation therapy in individuals with head and neck cancer. It is also used to manage dry mouth in individuals with Sjogren’s syndrome, a condition impacting the immune system that leads to dryness in specific areas of the body, including the eyes and mouth. Pilocarpine belongs to a category of drugs known as cholinergic agonists, functioning by enhancing the production of saliva in the mouth.

Uses and Dosage

Pilocarpine is available in tablet form for oral consumption. When pilocarpine is used to alleviate dry mouth in individuals undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer, it is typically taken three times a day. For those with Sjogren’s syndrome seeking relief from dry mouth, it is generally taken four times daily. To maintain consistent effectiveness, take pilocarpine at approximately the same times every day.

Follow your doctor’s directives precisely; do not exceed or decrease your dosage, nor should you take it more frequently than prescribed.

Your doctor may initiate your treatment with an initial pilocarpine dose, which may be adjusted based on how well your symptoms are managed and any side effects you encounter. Make sure to communicate your well-being and any changes in how you feel during your pilocarpine treatment to your doctor.

Pilocarpine effectively controls your symptoms but does not offer a cure for your condition. Even if you start to feel better, continue taking pilocarpine. Do not discontinue pilocarpine without consulting your doctor.
