Description

Indications

This medication is prescribed to address the symptoms and manifestations of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, particularly in cases where there is a heightened risk of stomach bleeding or ulcers. This product encompasses two distinct medications: esomeprazole and naproxen.

Naproxen, classified as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), serves to diminish pain, swelling, and joint rigidity. Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), effectively inhibits stomach acid production. This combination of esomeprazole and naproxen offers the pain-relieving advantages of naproxen while potentially reducing the likelihood of ulcers or bleeding incidents that can occur with naproxen use.

Uses and Dosage

Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication by mouth, typically twice daily – once in the morning and once in the evening – at least 30 minutes prior to having a meal. Ensure you consume it with a full glass of water, approximately 8 ounces or 240 milliliters, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Ingest the tablet whole, without breaking, chewing, crushing, or dissolving it, as these actions may disrupt the gradual release of the drug and potentially intensify side effects. If necessary, you can use antacids while on this medication.

After taking this medication, remain upright for a minimum of 10 minutes; avoid lying down.

The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. For pediatric patients, the dosage is also dependent on body weight. To minimize the risk of stomach bleeding and other adverse effects, take the lowest effective dose of this medication for the shortest duration as recommended. Do not increase your dose, take it more frequently, or prolong the treatment beyond the prescribed duration.

Consistently use this medication to maximize its benefits. Adhere to the same daily schedule when taking it. It might take up to 2 weeks of continued medication use to experience the full therapeutic effect.

Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens. The likelihood of encountering side effects escalates over time. Consult your doctor regarding the appropriate duration for taking this medication.

Caution

Prior to initiating naproxen/esomeprazole, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any allergies to either of these medications, aspirin, other NSAIDs, proton-pump inhibitors like omeprazole or pantoprazole, or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients capable of causing allergic reactions or other complications.

Before commencing this medication, discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of asthma, liver disease, stomach/intestinal/esophagus issues, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, edema, low sodium levels in the blood, blood disorders (e.g., anemia), bleeding or clotting disorders, nasal polyps, or lupus.

The use of NSAID medications like naproxen can sometimes lead to kidney problems. These issues are more likely to arise if you become dehydrated, have heart failure or kidney disease, are an elderly individual, or take certain medications. To prevent dehydration, follow your doctor’s fluid intake recommendations, and promptly inform your doctor of any changes in your urine output.

This medication may induce dizziness or drowsiness. The combination of alcohol or marijuana with this drug can intensify these effects. Avoid operating machinery, driving, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can do so safely.

Note that this medication may increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Regular use of alcohol and tobacco, especially when combined with this medication, can further elevate the risk of stomach bleeding.

Proton pump inhibitors may heighten the risk of bone fractures, particularly with prolonged usage, higher doses, and in older adults. Discuss methods to prevent bone loss and fractures, such as calcium (e.g., calcium citrate) and vitamin D supplements, with your doctor or pharmacist.

Older adults may be at an increased risk of bone loss and fractures, stomach/intestinal bleeding, kidney problems, heart attacks, strokes, and C. difficile infections while using this medication.

Prior to using this medication, women of childbearing age should discuss the benefits and risks with their doctor(s). Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication may harm an unborn baby and lead to complications during labor and delivery. Its use is not recommended during pregnancy from the 20th week until delivery. If your doctor determines that you need this medication between the 20th and 30th weeks of pregnancy, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible. Do not use this medication after the 30th week of pregnancy.

Naproxen can pass into breast milk. Whether esomeprazole passes into breast milk is unknown. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
