Description

Indications

This medication is indicated for the treatment of hemorrhoids, as well as the alleviation of itching and swelling in the rectum and anus. It is also used in conjunction with other medications to address specific intestinal conditions, such as ulcerative colitis affecting the rectum, as well as other inflammatory conditions in the rectal and anal areas.

Hydrocortisone suppositories aid in the relief of rectal pain, itching, bloody diarrhea, and bleeding by directly reducing inflammation and swelling in the rectum and anus. Hydrocortisone belongs to a pharmacological class known as corticosteroids.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this product rectally according to the instructions provided by your doctor, typically 2 or 3 times per day. The dosage and duration of treatment will be determined based on your specific medical condition and your response to the treatment.

To ensure proper handling, avoid prolonged contact with the suppository as it may melt. Unwrap the suppository and, if desired, moisten the tip with a few drops of water. Assume a position lying on your left side with your right knee bent. Gently insert the suppository, pointed end first, into the rectum using your finger, ensuring it is inserted deeply enough to prevent it from sliding back out. Remain in a reclined position for a few minutes. Refrain from having a bowel movement for at least 1 hour to allow sufficient time for the medication to take effect.

After each use, remember to wash your hands thoroughly. This medication may cause staining on fabrics.

For optimal results, adhere to the prescribed regimen consistently. Refrain from using more of this product, using it more frequently, or extending its use beyond the prescribed duration. Doing so will not expedite your recovery and may increase the risk of experiencing adverse effects.

If you have been using this medication for an extended period, do not discontinue its use without consulting your doctor, as abruptly stopping the medication may exacerbate certain conditions. Your doctor may recommend a gradual reduction in dosage.

Inform your doctor if your condition does not show improvement following the prescribed treatment duration or if it worsens.

Caution

Prior to initiating hydrocortisone usage, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies to hydrocortisone, other corticosteroids (such as prednisone), or any other substances. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could potentially trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have or have had: other gastrointestinal disorders, infections, certain ocular conditions, cardiac problems, hypertension, liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid abnormalities (overactive or underactive thyroid), diabetes, bone loss (osteoporosis), bleeding disorders, blood clotting disorders, mental health conditions, or low blood potassium levels.

In rare cases, prolonged use of corticosteroid medications can impair the body’s ability to respond to physical stress. Prior to undergoing surgery, emergency treatment, or in the event of a serious illness or injury, it is crucial to inform your doctor or dentist if you are currently using this medication or have used it within the past few months.

Inform your healthcare professional about your hydrocortisone usage before receiving any immunizations, vaccinations, or skin tests. Avoid close contact with individuals who have recently received live vaccines, such as the nasal spray flu vaccine.

In rare instances, this medication may increase the likelihood of infections or worsen existing infections. Stay away from individuals with easily transmissible infections, such as chickenpox, COVID-19, measles, or the flu. If you have been exposed to an infection or require further details, consult your doctor.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly bone loss/pain, stomach or intestinal bleeding, and mental or mood changes, such as confusion.

Although unlikely, prolonged usage of this medication may temporarily impede a child’s growth. Have regular check-ups with the doctor to monitor the child’s height.

During pregnancy, this medication should only be used when clearly necessary and for limited durations. Other forms of hydrocortisone (administered orally or via injection) may pose risks to an unborn baby. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
