Description

Indications

Candesartan is classified as an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) and is primarily prescribed for the treatment of hypertension. Its primary goal is to effectively reduce elevated blood pressure, thereby reducing the risks associated with conditions such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and renal complications. It is also utilized in the management of heart failure. Candesartan exerts its therapeutic effects by inducing vasodilation and improving blood flow.

Uses and Dosage

Candesartan is available in tablet form for oral administration. Typically, it is taken once or twice daily, with or without food. Establish a consistent schedule by taking candesartan at approximately the same time each day. Take candesartan precisely as directed, without altering the dosage or frequency unless specifically instructed by your doctor.

Initially, your doctor will likely prescribe a low dose of candesartan, gradually increasing it at intervals of no more than two weeks.

While candesartan effectively manages high blood pressure, it does not cure the condition. Although you may experience a decrease in blood pressure within the first two weeks of treatment, it may take four to six weeks to observe the full benefits of candesartan.

Continue taking the medication even if you feel well. Do not discontinue candesartan without consulting your doctor.

In certain cases, candesartan may be used to address diabetic nephropathy, a kidney disease associated with diabetes and high blood pressure.

Discuss the potential risks of using this medication for your specific condition with your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • headache
  • back pain
  • sore throat

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • decreased urination

Caution

Prior to initiating candesartan treatment, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies, including allergies to candesartan itself or other substances. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of liver disease, elevated blood potassium levels, or dehydration.

This drug may cause dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness until you can safely do so.

Excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting may lead to lightheadedness. Inform your doctor if you experience prolonged episodes of diarrhea or vomiting.

The use of this product may result in increased levels of potassium in the body. Prior to using potassium supplements or salt substitutes containing potassium, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Elderly individuals may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness, elevated potassium levels, and changes in urine output (indicative of kidney problems).

Notify your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Avoid pregnancy while using candesartan, as it may harm an unborn baby. If pregnancy occurs, promptly discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

The passage of this drug into breast milk is not well understood. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using candesartan.
