Description

Indications

Dicyclomine is indicated for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, a specific type of intestinal disorder. Its therapeutic action involves alleviating symptoms such as stomach and intestinal cramping by inhibiting natural gut movements and inducing relaxation in the muscles of the stomach and intestines.

Dicyclomine falls under the classification of anticholinergics/antispasmodics. This medication is contraindicated in children below six months of age due to the potential for severe adverse reactions.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, as instructed by your physician, generally four times per day.

To minimize the likelihood of adverse effects, your healthcare provider may direct you to begin taking this medication at a low dose and gradually increase it. Comply with your doctor’s guidance.

In case you are using the liquid formulation of this medication, use a unique measuring device/spoon to precisely measure the dose. Avoid using a household spoon as it may not provide the correct dosage. Dilute the liquid dose with an equal amount of water before ingesting it.

Note that antacids may interfere with the absorption of dicyclomine. Avoid taking antacids simultaneously with this medication. If you are on antacids, take them after meals and administer dicyclomine before meals.

The dosage of this medication depends on your age, medical condition, and response to therapy.

Do not exceed the prescribed dose or ingest this drug more often than recommended without your doctor’s approval. Your medical condition will not improve any quicker, and the risk of experiencing serious side effects may increase.

Inform your physician if your symptoms persist or worsen.

Caution

Prior to taking dicyclomine, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to the medication or any other allergens. This product may contain inert components that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before initiating therapy with this medication, disclose your medical history to your healthcare provider or pharmacist, particularly if you have a personal or family history of glaucoma (angle-closure type), prostate enlargement, urinary tract blockages, other stomach/intestinal problems, overactive thyroid, heart issues, high blood pressure, heartburn complications, certain nervous system conditions (autonomic neuropathy), personal or family history of substance abuse disorder, myasthenia gravis, liver problems, or kidney problems.

This medication may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana can exacerbate these side effects. Do not operate machinery, drive, or engage in any activities that require alertness or clear vision until it is safe to do so.

Avoid activities that may cause overheating, such as strenuous work or exercise in hot weather, or using hot tubs. Drink plenty of fluids and dress lightly when the weather is warm. If you overheat, seek a cool and restful area promptly. If you experience a fever that does not subside, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness, seek medical help immediately.

Older adults may be more vulnerable to the side effects of this drug, especially drowsiness, confusion, unusual excitement, constipation, fast heartbeat, and urination problems. Drowsiness and confusion can increase the risk of falls.
