Indications

Dorzolamide and timolol are combined to effectively manage eye conditions such as glaucoma and ocular hypertension, which can progressively impair vision due to elevated pressure levels. This medication is typically prescribed for patients who have not achieved satisfactory results with other treatments.

Dorzolamide belongs to the group of topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, while timolol is classified as a topical beta blocker. By inhibiting the production of natural fluids in the eye, dorzolamide and timolol work together to reduce pressure in the eye and maintain healthy visual function.

Uses and Dosage

The solution form of dorzolamide and timolol is meant to be applied directly to the eye, typically twice a day on the affected eye(s). Use it at approximately the same times each day to help you remember.

To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:

1. Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
2. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
3. Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
4. Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
5. Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
6. Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
7. Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
8. Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
9. Wash hands to remove any residual medication.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

• taste changes (bitter, sour, or unusual taste)
• eye burning or stinging
• itchy eyes
• dry eyes
• eye tearing
• dizziness

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

• blurred vision
• skin rash
• swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
• shortness of breath
• pink eye
• redness or swelling of the eyelid
• muscle weakness

Caution

If you have any allergies, including an allergy to timolol or dorzolamide, or if you have any other allergies, inform your doctor or pharmacist before using this medication. This product may contain inactive ingredients, such as preservatives like benzalkonium chloride, which can trigger allergic reactions or other issues.

Before taking this medication, provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have lung disease, certain forms of irregular heartbeats, specific heart conditions (e.g., heart failure), kidney disease (e.g., kidney stones), liver disease, diabetes, overactive thyroid disease, muscle weakness disorders, low blood flow to the brain, or severe allergies.

If you have an eye infection or injury or have recently undergone eye surgery, talk to your doctor about whether you should continue using your current bottle of timolol/dorzolamide. You may be advised to switch to a new bottle.

If you have diabetes, this medication can prevent the fast or pounding heartbeat that typically occurs when your blood sugar level drops too low (hypoglycemia). Other symptoms of low blood sugar, such as dizziness and sweating, are not affected by this drug.

Following the application of this drug, your vision may be blurred for a short time. Until your vision returns to normal, avoid driving, using machinery, or engaging in any activities that require clear vision.

During pregnancy, use this medication only if it is absolutely necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Timolol is present in breast milk, but it is unknown whether dorzolamide is as well. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
