Description

Indications

Rabeprazole is a medication classified as a proton-pump inhibitor that effectively reduces acid production in the stomach. It is used to manage the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults and children aged 12 years and above. GERD is a condition wherein the backward flow of stomach acid causes heartburn and may cause damage to the esophagus, which connects the throat and stomach.

Apart from GERD, rabeprazole is also prescribed to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a disorder characterized by excessive acid production in the stomach in adults. It is employed in conjunction with other medications to treat ulcers or sores that develop in the stomach or intestine lining, and to eradicate Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria responsible for causing ulcers in adults.

Uses and Dosage

If you are taking rabeprazole tablets, adhere to your physician’s directions by taking the medication orally with or without food, typically once or twice daily. Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not break, chew, or crush it, as doing so may result in the sudden release of the entire dose, leading to a higher risk of side effects.

When using rabeprazole capsules, take the prescribed dose thirty minutes before a meal, once daily, as directed by your doctor. Do not swallow the capsule whole; instead, open it and sprinkle the contents over a small amount of soft food or liquid that is at or below room temperature, such as applesauce or yogurt. Swallow the entire combination without chewing or crushing it.

The appropriate dosage and duration of treatment with rabeprazole are determined by your medical condition and response to therapy, with the pediatric dose also based on weight.

Antacids may be taken concurrently with this medication if necessary, but if taking sucralfate, take rabeprazole at least thirty minutes before.

To achieve the most benefits from rabeprazole, take it regularly at the same time(s) each day, and continue to use it for the duration of treatment even if symptoms improve.

Inform your doctor if your condition worsens or persists, as the risk of side effects increases over time.

Unexplained weight loss should also be reported to your physician.
