Description

Indications

Aspirin and dipyridamole are prescribed to individuals who are at high risk of experiencing another stroke and have previously suffered from transient ischemic attacks or a stroke caused by a blood clot. This medication consists of a slow-release formulation of dipyridamole and a minute dose of aspirin (25 milligrams per tablet).

The combination of low-dose aspirin and dipyridamole function as antiplatelet agents, which prevent platelets from aggregating, thus enabling blood to flow smoothly to the brain. This mechanism assists in averting the development of blood clots, which can potentially obstruct blood flow to the brain and cause ischemic stroke.

Uses and Dosage

The combination medication of aspirin and extended-release dipyridamole is administered orally in the form of a capsule. Typically, the medication is taken twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening, and should be ingested whole.

The capsules should not be opened, crushed, broken or chewed.

Adhere to the instructions provided on the prescription label carefully. The medication must be taken precisely as directed and should not be consumed in more significant or lesser amounts or frequency than prescribed by a doctor.

While the combination of aspirin and extended-release dipyridamole mitigates the possibility of stroke, it does not eradicate the likelihood of occurrence entirely. Continue taking the medication even if there are no symptoms. Do not discontinue aspirin and extended-release dipyridamole without consulting with a doctor.

Prior to taking this medication, inform your doctor of any allergies you may have to dipyridamole, aspirin, other salicylates, or NSAIDs, as well as any other allergies you may have. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that could cause allergic reactions or other adverse effects.

Before commencing this medication, please consult with your doctor or pharmacist regarding your medical history, particularly if you have a history of aspirin-sensitive asthma, bleeding disorders, hypotension (low blood pressure), heart problems, stomach problems, kidney disease, liver disease, myasthenia gravis (a certain muscle problem), nasal polyps, or bleeding in the brain.

This medication may cause dizziness, and alcohol or marijuana may increase the dizziness effect. Do not drive, operate machinery or perform any activities requiring alertness until it is safe to do so.

This medication may cause stomach bleeding. The concomitant use of alcohol and tobacco while using this medication may heighten the risk of stomach bleeding. Limit alcohol consumption and quit smoking.

Your doctor may advise you to stop taking aspirin/dipyridamole ten days before surgery. Do not discontinue this medication without first consulting the doctor who prescribed it.

The amount of aspirin in this medication may not be sufficient to prevent a heart attack. If aspirin is required to prevent a heart attack, please consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

This medication contains aspirin. Children and adolescents under 18 years of age should not take aspirin if they have chickenpox, flu, or any undiagnosed illness or if they have recently received a vaccine. Taking aspirin in these situations increases the risk of developing Reye’s syndrome, a rare but severe illness.

Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this medication, particularly dizziness and bleeding.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only if clearly needed. Please consult with your doctor regarding the risks and benefits.

Aspirin and dipyridamole pass into breast milk. Consult with your doctor before breastfeeding.

FAQ

Can I just take aspirin instead of Aggrenox?

No, you should take Aggrenox if it’s prescribed to you. Aggrenox contains two different antiplatelet medications that work together to help prevent additional strokes from happening.

Do I need to take Aggrenox with food?

No, you can take Aggrenox with or without food. But this medication commonly causes stomach side effects, like indigestion, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. So taking it with food might help lower the risk of getting these side effects.
