Description

Indications

Hydroxyzine is employed in both adults and children to alleviate itching induced by allergic skin reactions. It is also used either on its own or in combination with other medications in adults and children to alleviate anxiety and tension.

In adults and children, hydroxyzine is also administered as a sedative before and after general anesthesia for surgical procedures. Classified as an antihistamine, hydroxyzine functions by inhibiting the action of histamine, a substance in the body responsible for allergic symptoms.

Uses and Dosage

Hydroxyzine is available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, syrup, and suspension, for oral administration. Typically, it is taken three or four times a day.

Follow the prescribed dosage of hydroxyzine precisely. Refrain from taking more or less than instructed, and avoid taking it more frequently than prescribed by your doctor.

For the suspension form, make sure to shake it thoroughly before each use to ensure even mixing of the medication.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • dry mouth
  • constipation (especially in older adults)
  • confusion (especially in older adults)
  • dizziness
  • headache

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • unintentional trembling or shaking movements
  • seizures
  • rash
  • pus-filled, blister-like sores (lesions)
  • areas of swelling and redness on the skin
  • fever

Caution

  • Before taking hydroxyzine, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, cetirizine, levocetirizine, or if you have any other allergies. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.
  • Discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have breathing problems, high pressure in the eye (glaucoma), high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver problems, seizures, stomach/intestine problems, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or difficulty urinating.
  • Hydroxyzine may cause a condition that affects the heart rhythm (QT prolongation). This can rarely lead to serious (potentially fatal) fast/irregular heartbeat and other symptoms (such as severe dizziness, fainting) that require immediate medical attention. The risk of QT prolongation may be higher if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other drugs that can cause QT prolongation. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all the drugs you are taking and if you have any of the following conditions: certain heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG), or a family history of certain heart problems (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac death).
  • Low levels of potassium or magnesium in the blood may also increase the risk of QT prolongation. This risk may rise if you use certain drugs (such as diuretics/”water pills”) or if you experience conditions such as severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Discuss with your doctor about taking hydroxyzine safely.
  • This medication may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can intensify these effects. Refrain from driving, using machinery, or engaging in activities that require alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely. Avoid alcoholic beverages. If you are using marijuana (cannabis), talk to your doctor.
  • Liquid products may contain sugar and/or alcohol. Use caution if you have diabetes, liver disease, or any other condition that requires you to limit/avoid these substances in your diet. Seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist on using this product safely.
  • Children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug. It can often cause excitement in young children instead of drowsiness.
  • Older adults may be more susceptible to the side effects of this drug, particularly drowsiness, confusion, constipation, trouble urinating, or QT prolongation. Drowsiness and confusion can increase the risk of falling.
  • During pregnancy, use this medication only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
  • It is unclear whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
