Description

Indications

Dapsone is indicated for the treatment of dermatitis herpetiformis, a specific type of skin disorder. It is also utilized in conjunction with other pharmaceuticals to treat Hansen’s disease. Dapsone is classified as a sulfone and exerts its therapeutic effect by reducing inflammation and halting bacterial growth.

This medication is ineffective against viral infections, including the common cold and flu. The inappropriate use or misuse of antibiotics may result in diminished efficacy, and is therefore not recommended.

Uses and Dosage

Administer this medication orally, with or without food, typically once per day- or as per the guidance of your physician.

Medications used to alleviate heartburn/reduce stomach acid (such as large doses of antacids, ranitidine, famotidine) may hinder complete absorption of dapsone into your bloodstream, which could potentially reduce its efficacy. To avoid this, ensure a minimum two-hour interval between your dapsone dose and any of these products.

In case you are taking dapsone for a skin disorder, your doctor may initiate treatment with a low dosage and gradually increase it to achieve disease control.

If dapsone is being used for the treatment of Hansen’s disease or to avert infections due to HIV, the medication may need to be taken for several years, or lifelong.

The prescribed dosage is determined based on your medical condition and response to treatment. For children, the dosage is also dependent on their age and weight.

To obtain the maximum therapeutic effect, take this antibiotic at regular intervals. Establish a fixed schedule by taking the medication at the same time(s) every day.

Notify your physician if your condition deteriorates.

Caution

Prior to taking dapsone, inform your physician or pharmacist if you are allergic to it or other comparable drugs such as sulfoxone, or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before using this medication, disclose your medical history to your physician or pharmacist, particularly if you have certain blood disorders (such as anemia, G6PD deficiency, methemoglobin reductase deficiency), liver disease, heart disease, lung disease, serious infection, or very high blood sugar (diabetic ketosis).

If using this drug for the treatment of Hansen’s disease, note that as your immune system combats the infection, skin sores may exacerbate, and numbness, pain, tingling or muscle weakness may occur. This may necessitate specialized treatment. Inform your doctor promptly if you experience any of these symptoms.

This drug can cause dizziness. Consumption of alcohol or marijuana can intensify this effect. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or performing any task that requires alertness until you can do it safely.
