Description

Indications

Oxybutynin is a medication belonging to the class of anticholinergics/antimuscarinics. Its primary use is to treat overactive bladder, a condition characterized by uncontrolled contractions of the bladder muscles leading to frequent urination, an urgent need to urinate, and incontinence. It is prescribed for both adults and children, and can also be taken as an extended-release tablet to control bladder muscles in individuals who have spina bifida or other nervous system conditions that affect bladder muscles. Oxybutynin works by relaxing the bladder muscles.

Uses and Dosage

Oxybutynin is available in tablet, syrup, and extended-release tablet forms, all of which are taken orally. The tablets and syrup are typically taken 2 to 4 times daily, while the extended-release tablet is taken once a day, with or without food.

Take oxybutynin at the same time every day and follow the instructions on the prescription label carefully. Take oxybutynin exactly as prescribed and not to take more or less of it or take it more frequently than directed by your doctor.

Extended-release tablets should be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of water or other liquids. Do not chew, crush or split them.

Use a dose-measuring spoon or cup to ensure that you measure the right amount of liquid for each dose, rather than a household spoon.

Your doctor may begin with a low dose of oxybutynin and gradually increase it, but no more than once a week. Although oxybutynin may alleviate your symptoms, it will not cure your condition. Continue taking oxybutynin even if you feel better, and do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor.

You may see some improvement in your symptoms within the first 2 weeks of treatment, but it may take 6-8 weeks to experience the full benefit of oxybutynin. If your symptoms do not improve at all after 8 weeks, speak to your doctor.

Caution

Before taking oxybutynin, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies, including allergies to oxybutynin or any other substances. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.

Before using oxybutynin, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have glaucoma, bladder disease, myasthenia gravis, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disease, dementia, autonomic neuropathy, enlarged prostate gland, stomach or intestinal disease, hyperthyroidism, or Parkinson’s disease.

Oxybutynin can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision. Using alcohol or marijuana may increase these effects, so it is essential to avoid driving, operating machinery, or doing anything that requires alertness or clear vision until you can do so safely.

This medication can increase the risk of heatstroke because it decreases sweating. To avoid overheating, avoid hot weather, saunas, and strenuous activities.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of oxybutynin, such as drowsiness, confusion, constipation, and difficulty urinating. Drowsiness and confusion can increase the risk of falls.

If you are pregnant, oxybutynin should only be used if it is clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before using this medication during pregnancy.

It is unknown whether oxybutynin passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
