Indications
Fluorometholone is indicated for the treatment of specific ophthalmic conditions resulting from inflammation or injury. The medication exerts its therapeutic effects by alleviating symptoms such as edema, erythema, and pruritus. It pertains to a pharmacological class referred to as corticosteroids.
Uses and Dosage
Adhere to a consistent schedule by using fluorometholone ophthalmic at approximately the same time(s) each day. Strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage and frequency of cromolyn eye drops, avoiding any deviations such as excessive or reduced usage without proper medical guidance.
Following initiation of treatment, you should experience an improvement in your symptoms, including relief from eye itching, tearing, redness, and discharge, within a few days. However, up to six weeks of consistent treatment may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
If your symptoms fail to improve or worsen during the course of treatment, contact your doctor for further guidance and assessment.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- feeling like you have something in your eye
- burning, stinging, or itchy eyes
- redness of your eyelid
- increased tears
- changes in how foods taste
- blurry vision
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- eye pain
- skin rash
- eye or eyelid swelling
- eye discharge
- increased pressure in your eye
Caution
Prior to initiating the use of fluorometholone, inform your healthcare provider or pharmacist about any known allergies to this medication or other substances. It should be noted that this product might contain inactive components that can trigger allergic reactions or other complications.
Before commencing treatment with this medication, discuss your medical history, particularly any occurrences of eye infections, recent eye surgeries, cataracts, open-angle glaucoma, severe nearsightedness (myopia), or diabetes, with your doctor or pharmacist.
Following the application of this medication, temporary blurring of vision may occur. Refrain from operating vehicles, machinery, or engaging in activities that demand clear vision until such time that it is safe to do so.
In the event of a new eye infection or injury, or if eye surgery becomes necessary, consult your doctor regarding whether you should continue using the current bottle of fluorometholone eye drops or initiate a new bottle.
During pregnancy, the use of this medication should be limited to situations where the benefits clearly outweigh the potential risks. Have a thorough discussion with your doctor regarding the risks and benefits associated with its use during pregnancy.
The passage of this product into breast milk is not yet known. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding while using this medication.
