Description

Description:

Galvus is a drug that contains vildagliptin as its active ingredient. This is an oral anti-hyperglycemic agent, a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor, used alone or combined with other medicines to lower blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by reducing incretin hormone inactivation.

What is Galvus used for?

  • In patients whose diabetes is not well controlled by diet and exercise and are unable to take metformin;
  • When metformin, a thiazolidinedione, or a sulphonylurea alone are insufficient to control diabetes, dual treatment is employed; however, it is only used in conjunction with a sulphonylurea in individuals who cannot take metformin.
  • In combination with a sulfonylurea and metformin (triple treatment) in people whose diabetes is not managed adequately by these medications plus diet and exercise;
  • In people whose diabetes is not controlled by diet and exercise with a consistent dosage of insulin (with or without metformin).

Frequently Asked Questions:

-How long should I take Galvus?

Continue to take your medication for as long as your doctor advises.

-How does Galvus work?

It works by blocking the breakdown of ‘incretin’ hormones in the body. These hormones are produced after a meal, encouraging the pancreas to produce insulin. When blood glucose levels are high, Vildagliptin stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin by increasing incretin hormone levels.
