Description

Indications

Gemfibrozil, in conjunction with dietary modifications, is prescribed to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood. It is also utilized in individuals with a combination of low high-density lipoprotein (HDL; ‘good cholesterol’) levels and high low-density lipoprotein (LDL; ‘bad cholesterol’) and triglyceride levels, with the aim of reducing the risk of heart disease. Belonging to the class of lipid-regulating medications called fibrates, gemfibrozil functions by inhibiting the liver’s production of triglycerides.

Uses and Dosage

Follow your doctor’s instructions and take this medication orally, usually twice a day, approximately 30 minutes before your morning and evening meals.

The prescribed dosage is contingent on your medical condition and your response to the treatment.

If you are also using certain other drugs to lower your cholesterol, such as bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol, ensure to take gemfibrozil at least 1 hour before or at least 4-6 hours after these medications. This precaution prevents potential interactions that could hinder the full absorption of gemfibrozil.

To maximize the benefits, take this medication consistently at the same times each day. Continue taking it even if you feel well, as many individuals with high cholesterol/triglycerides may not experience noticeable symptoms.

Adhere to your doctor’s recommendations concerning diet and exercise. It might take up to 3 months before you observe the full advantages of this drug.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • stomach pain
  • heartburn

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
  • blurred vision

Caution

Prior to taking gemfibrozil, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any known allergies to gemfibrozil, other “fibrates” like fenofibrate, or any other substances. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications.

Before commencing this medication, disclose your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have a history of liver disease such as biliary cholangitis or hepatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney disease, or alcohol use.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor promptly. The use of gemfibrozil during pregnancy is not advisable, as it may harm an unborn baby. If you become pregnant while using gemfibrozil, discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor immediately.

Regarding breastfeeding, it is uncertain whether this medication passes into breast milk. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor to make informed decisions.

FAQ

Is Lopid a statin?

No. Gemfibrozil (Lopid) is a fibrate, which is a class of medications that help with cholesterol problems, especially high triglycerides.

Can I take Lopid after I eat?

Your body absorbs the most amount of gemfibrozil (Lopid) if you take it 30 minutes before a meal. If you take gemfibrozil (Lopid) after eating food, less medication gets absorbed into your body, which might affect how well it works for you.
