Prednisolone is utilized in the treatment of specific eye conditions stemming from inflammation or injury. This medication operates by alleviating symptoms that encompass swelling, redness, and itching. It falls within the category of medications referred to as corticosteroids.
Uses and Dosage
Unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider, refrain from wearing contact lenses while utilizing this medicine. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to sterilize contact lenses and consult your doctor before resuming their use.
In cases where your doctor approves contact lens use during your treatment with this medication, remember to remove the lenses prior to applying the eye drops. The preservative contained in this product could be absorbed by the contact lenses. After each eye drop dose, wait for a minimum of 15 minutes before reinserting the lenses.
To maximize the benefits of this medication, adhere to a consistent usage schedule, taking it at the same time(s) each day.
The prescribed dosage and treatment duration are determined based on your medical condition and your response to the treatment. Do not exceed the prescribed frequency or duration, as doing so could heighten the risk of adverse effects.
Continue using this medication for the entire prescribed duration. Avoid discontinuing its use without consulting your doctor, as sudden cessation could exacerbate certain conditions. If your doctor determines a need to discontinue, they may advise a gradual reduction of your dose.
In the event that the product becomes contaminated (e.g., if the drops change color), refrain from using it. The use of contaminated eye medication can lead to infection, severe eye damage, and vision loss. For further guidance, reach out to your doctor or pharmacist.
To administer the eye drops, the following steps should be followed:
- Thoroughly wash hands with soap and water.
- Do not allow the dropper tip to touch the eye or any other surface, and ensure that it is kept clean.
- Tilt the head back and pull down the lower lid of the eye using the index finger to form a pocket.
- Hold the dropper as close to the eye as possible without making contact, and brace the remaining fingers against the face.
- Squeeze the dropper gently to instill a single drop in the pocket created by the lower eyelid while looking upwards.
- Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid and keep the eye closed for 2-3 minutes while tilting the head down.
- Apply gentle pressure to the tear duct using a finger.
- Use a tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from the face.
- Wash hands to remove any residual medication.
Side Effects
Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:
- blurred vision
- changed sense of taste
- dilated (enlarged) pupils
- eye irritation
- headache
- sensation that there is something in the eye
- sensitivity to light
- slowed wound healing
- watery eyes
Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:
- difficulty focusing
- eye pain
- skin rash, itching, redness, or swelling in or around the eyes
- clouding of the lens of the eye
- sensitivity to bright light
- seeing halos of bright colours around lights
- increased pressure in your eyes
- vision changes
Caution
Prior to using prednisolone, inform your doctor or pharmacist about any allergic reactions you have, including to this medication, or if you have any other allergies. This product might contain inactive ingredients, such as sulfites present in certain brands, which could lead to allergic reactions or other complications.
Before initiating this medication, share your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have experienced eye infections, undergone recent eye surgery, have cataracts, open-angle glaucoma, severe nearsightedness (myopia), or diabetes.
Following the application of this drug, there may be a temporary blurring or instability in your vision. To ensure safety, avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring clear vision until your vision stabilizes.
If you develop a new eye infection or injury, or require eye surgery, consult your doctor regarding whether to continue using your current bottle of prednisolone eye drops or switch to a new bottle.
During pregnancy, consider using this medication only when it is essential. Discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.
The passage of this medication into breast milk is unknown. Prior to breastfeeding, consult your doctor for guidance.

How long is it safe to use Pred Forte eye drops?
