Description

Indications

Cinacalcet is prescribed for the treatment of excess parathyroid hormone in individuals with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis. It is utilized to address elevated levels of calcium caused by an overactive parathyroid gland or parathyroid cancer. By reducing the levels of parathyroid hormone, calcium, and phosphorus in the body, cinacalcet assists in regulating the proper amount of these substances to prevent bone disease.

Uses and Dosage

Cinacalcet is administered orally in the form of a tablet. Typically, it is taken once daily with food or shortly after a meal. To ensure that you take it regularly, try taking it at the same time every day. Take cinacalcet precisely as prescribed by your doctor, without altering the dose or frequency.

The tablets must be swallowed whole and not split, chewed, or crushed.

Your doctor will initiate cinacalcet at a low dose and may gradually increase it every 2-4 weeks.

Cinacalcet may help manage your condition, but it is not a cure. Even if you feel well, continue taking cinacalcet as directed by your doctor. Do not discontinue taking cinacalcet without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention:

  • upset stomach
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • chest pain

Inform your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any serious side effects:

  • burning, tingling, or unusual feelings of the lips, tongue, fingers, or feet
  • muscle aches or cramps
  • sudden tightening of the muscles in the hands, feet, face, or throat
  • seizures
  • infection of dialysis access

Caution

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any allergies you may have before taking cinacalcet. Inactive ingredients in the product may cause allergic reactions or other complications.

Prior to using this medication, provide your doctor or pharmacist with your medical history, particularly low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia), seizures, and stomach or intestinal problems.

Significantly low levels of calcium can impact heart rhythm (QT prolongation, ventricular arrhythmias). The risk may be elevated if you have certain conditions or take medications that can affect heart rhythm.

Prior to taking cinacalcet, inform your doctor of all medications you are taking and if you have any heart rhythm or other heart-related problems (such as heart failure, low blood pressure).

During pregnancy, use this medication only if necessary and as recommended by your doctor. Discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor.

It is unclear if this medication passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
